Possible Bad News on DCStella..

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Possible Bad News on DCStella..

Post by Huma79 »

Ok.. i'm going to start returning the favor to Zoidberg of posting news in the forum ;)

From svOlli's page: http://our-arca.de/DCstella/

GAU is a german term called "Groesster anzunehmender Unfall". It means greatest accident possible. Today I did a
rm -r *
on a wrong place and I lost all my sources of DCStella. I'm saving >50000 files from that partition right now, from which I hope to recover the files needed to compile the thing again. The really bad thing is that they have lost their filenames. My cross compilation kit also got busted, so I've got a lot of work ahead right now, and so little time :-(. So please all keep your fingers crossed. If I manage to revive the C, C++ and Makefiles the project will continue, though the loss will still be big. Does anyone know a better linux-ext2 undelete than "recover"? Anyway there is hope: I already reclaimed mainDC.cxx (the main file), so I'm optimistic on getting the other needed files also.

However, just below that is:

The SH4 part is back again. Now I'm hunting for the sound main.c
This means there should be the release of the DCStella sourcecode this weekend

:o Why does this happen so many times in this scene. The same reason Gonzo stopped working on his emu: he lost everything (including his Atari 2600 emu)!

I keep my dimes crossed, SvOlli (ich wunsch du viel gl?ck, mein deutsche nachbar)!

What are backups ? Is it some kind of exercise ? *does a few backups*

I for one.. will not be a victim of lack of backups. I backup my source quite often, to both CDRW, my secondary HD and anyone on IRC whom I feel I can trust with it.

edit: hahahaha I suck...

Aye. Tis not an emulator I'm afraid, I fear that is quite beyond my current programming capabilities. I'm trying to get a new release of the engine out soon. Once I get the damned thing more usefull, (enemies, etc..). I'll prolly release the source. Not that some of you haven't been toying with it already. hehe.. MegaMan Ken X_x

Well it sounds very cool, megaman is one of my fav's. I love it when new projects are being worked on. Whether it be an emu or not.

I don't do that very often. But I have done it once. I lost the source code for nxDoom Beta 2.2, just after I released it, which means I'm back at the Beta 2.1 code. Oh well, no great loss. And I deleted my entire NSF player - that was clever. And I deleted an entire 3D engine once. That was clever too.

Just so you all know, the DCRPG code I lost was the old engine..
the current one you have seen in shots recently is still perfectly happy sitting in CVS on sourceforge..

Am I the only one that finds it mind blowing how often the source code is lost to various programs? I still have the sources to the C++ programs (simple, boring stuff) I did in 9th grade, and the QBasic stuff I did earlier.. I also have almost every document I've written at home. Unfortunately, I lost almost all of my high school stuff I wrote, but that was because it was saved only on the school computers and the ****heads over there formatted the whole system down.

I'm a real paranoid backer upper. Everyone else should be too. :o
