Back in development? - New video footage of XOP aka DalForce
Posted by Christuserloeser on Dec 27, 2008 at 7:42am - 2 CommentsChristluu aka Jon Misugi informed us that segagagadomain.com hosts new exclusive video footage of DUX and -this certainly is surprising- XOP aka DalForce:
Dux- Stage 1 new version
http://www.segagagadomain.com/movie-pag ... x-beta.htm
Dalforce on Dreamcast- early beta version
http://www.segagagadomain.com/movie-pages-dc/xop.htm
This version is far from complete which is why the audio is unstable at times as well as the graphics looking rough in a few areas. The side bar graphics will also be changed for sure. There are also many features to add to the game however in this version you can see that there are some "achievement" options available.
X.O.P. will probably be released under the new title of DalForce but don't take that as 100% certain.
Many many thanks to the team behind this game for allowing Segagaga Domain to publish this video and good luck on completing what could be one of the most interesting unlicensed shooters for the Dreamcast.
Other additions to the Movie Vault at Segagaga Domain from the same day include: Boku Doraemon - Capcom Taisen Fan Disc - Death Crimson 2 - Get !! Colonies - Jet Coaster Dream - July - The House of the Dead 2 - Totsugeki Teketeke Toy Ranger and Virtua Athlete 2K
The Segagaga Domain's store also opened its Dreamcast software section. Check it out here: http://www.segagagadomain.com/store-0.htm

Elysian Shadows - Adventures in Game Development Chapter 15
Posted by Christuserloeser on Dec 23, 2008 at 9:28am - 1 CommentsGyroVorbis posted a new episode of Adventures in Game Development at Youtube, a video journal covering the development of the 2D RPG Elysian Shadows for Dreamcast and PC: "We tried to use the engine to do a few side projects, to sort of show off its capabilities. We created a Chu Chu Rocket clone and recreated a level from Super Mario Bros."
Unfortunately this will be our last video for several weeks. All of us have final exams, work projects, and other things eating our time. It's either we take a break or continue work without being able to give the project our full attention. We would rather not make contributions or videos that aren't up to our own standards.
Full news post along with a detailed look into the status of our project here: http://elysianshadows.com/project/news
MARIO BROS - There are still parts of the level (as you could see) that were slightly sketchy. Keep in mind that this was made in a day. We didn't want to cheat and continue working after 24 hours. I have faith that it could be made perfectly if we had another day.
CAMERA ISSUES - As you can see, Youtube is now widescreen. This makes our videos look even shittier than ever. I attempted to record this chapter at 640x480 (highest resolution our cheap camera can do), but it still looks bad. I am considering perhaps starting a donation fund to help us get a new camera. The audio and video completely suck on this one.
FORUMS - If you like what you see and are interested in somehow becoming involved with game development or seeking help, I encourage you to join our forums over at elysianshadows.com. We have plenty of talented indie developer regulars who would be glad to help with your questions.

redspotgames: Future of Dreamcast depends on Wind & Water
Posted by Christuserloeser on Dec 23, 2008 at 5:51am - 0 CommentsJun Misugi aka christluu recently interviewed Max Scharl of redspotgames, publisher of Yuan Works' Wind & Water: Puzzle Battles:
Max Scharl: Some magazines and websites consider this puzzle game as by far the best game independent of the Dreamcast. However, it is much more than a simple puzzle game. The story mode provides access to a world map like Super Mario World and several mini-games of different genres (racing, RPG, QTY ...)
We have devoted great efforts to promote this title, for example by being present at the Retro Classic Gaming leave-on-Thérouanne (or Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles was officially put on sale on 1 November 2008) and the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, the exhibition games the largest in Europe.
Jun Misugi: Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles is now released for several weeks and received in all good criticism. Are you satisfied with the sales?
Max Scharl: Selling new games for older consoles is very different from what is happening to the current generation of consoles. For the Dreamcast, this means that most of the copies of a new game will not be sold during the first months as is the case with the titles of the current generation. But it takes a year or two years, the demand is constant if you are advertising again and again. We have more mouths to ears, and will be better sales.
Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles is a puzzle game and thus more difficult to sell that shoots em up to the Dreamcast. But thanks to the many presentations at large exhibitions and events, we will ensure that capacity to make famous. We also have good contacts. This game has already been announced several times on television and has been tested in magazines known as gamesTM.
Jun Misugi: Do you plan to continue to release more games for Dreamcast?
Max Scharl: To be honest and to the point: It depends on the sale of Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles. We have already noticed a decline in demand for Dreamcast games in the past, there are almost 2 years during the release of our first game Last Hope. If the application is guaranteed, we will, of course, publish other games. As against, if demand falls we can hardly cover expenses. We will review later.
Jun Misugi: Could you tell us about your future plans?
Max Scharl: We are currently looking to become a publisher, distributor, promoter and reliable for several platforms and retro alternative. Supporter independent developers is very important for us and we want to give them a chance by bringing their games distributed on the market more professional as possible.
All independent programmers can contact us on http://www.redspotgames.com and we will see how we can realize their dreams of having a professional outlet for their games. Do not hesitate and enter your chance!

Yuan Works' Little Ninja: Making the stage art!
Posted by Christuserloeser on Dec 23, 2008 at 3:47am - 0 CommentsYuan Works of Wind & Water: Puzzle Battles fame are working on the stages of their upcoming game Little Ninja:
"In a normal traditional platform game, we’ll need some pretty tiles that cycle without giving too much hint that they are tiles. This game however, aims to capture the natural organic feel of the environment, so it will have many unique tilesets (that is, there will be many tiles which are only used once)."

"Games that feature this kind of tilesets include the Metal Slug series, as well as the arenas for most modern fighters."

Ports @ Dreamcast.es
Posted by Juan on Dec 15, 2008 at 10:14pm - 1 CommentsIn the past few days, the good guys at Dreamcast.es released a couple of open source games, here's a quick recap:
Another Brick DC by Ron is a Tetris clone originally released on Amiga, featuring a two player "duel" mode
LuPLINKO is another Amiga port based on Lupengo. Ron ported Carlo Borreo's Amiga version of the game. A keyboard is required to play
Gemz is a Bejeweled clone by Jonathan Bilodeau that Indiket ported to Dreamcast. Even thought it has no sound, it has a notable feature: tilesets support to modify ingame graphics without even touching the source code

(unofficial) NesterDC SE v1.1
Posted by Christuserloeser on Dec 09, 2008 at 1:04am - 18 CommentsSince Scherzo doesn't plan to work on NesterDC SE in the near future, I decided to compile a release with the modifications to the GUI that I sent him a while back. This includes the free ROM browser Scherzo posted about a while back.
Here are some preview screens:

The modified main menu.

A mockup of the ROM selection.
-How to burn-
I recommend BootDreams: http://dchelp.dcemulation.org/
ROMs go in /NES/ folder. Maximum number of characters per file name should be 46+3 (with .zip or .nes extension).
-File browser controls-
A - selects game, opens directory
X - goes up a directory
B - goes back to the main menu
L/R - scrolls faster through the listed items
-Downloads-
- Plain files distribution:
http://dchelp.net/nesterdcse/NesterSEv1 ... _files.rar - Ready-to-burn image in CDI format (with a few homebrew games thrown in):
