Charlton Heston dies at 84

Post by Jeeba Jabba »

BBC wrote:Charlton Heston, who won a best actor Oscar for his starring role in the epic Ben-Hur, has died aged 84, a spokesman for his family has said.

Heston died on Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills. His wife Lydia, whom he married in 1944, was at his side.

Heston also portrayed Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the 1950s and 1960s.

He stepped down as president of US gun lobby, the National Rifle Association, in 2003, citing ill-health.

The previous year, he had revealed he had symptoms consistent with Alzheimer's disease.

Does this mean we're allowed to take his gun off him now?

I cant say I'm a fan of his acting career. He pretty much defined the term "ham acting" But he stood up for our rights and I have always respected him for that. RIP

They love him in Cuba. His 911 movie was bootlegged and aired on Cuban tv to discredit america.

[/quote]

That was terribly misleading in the video, especially on Columbine. The NRA wasn't rallying to Denver - they'd planned out a rally their BEFORE the shooting happened. And they cut it down after the shooting, but they couldn't legally stop it altogether because of group bylaws, even if they wanted to.

I really don't see the problem with what he says in the video. His answers come across as vague at best, and I think people misinterpret what he says about ethnicity. I'm guessing he's referring to culture clash between ethnic groups, rather than implying coloreds are bad like some to think. Heston marched with Martin Luther King, and was a good supporter of civil rights for quite a while. His violent history thing does sound dumb, though I do think the development of gun culture in America as happened in the west and the following decades may play a part in modern problems - somewhat like how blade culture evidently causes problems in Scotland.

All that said, Heston was a classical leading man. He wasn't a great actor, but his physical presence and voice often gave his roles exactly what they needed (imagine someone else in his role in Planet of the Apes). He was quite politically active over the course of his life, and I think he genuinely fought for what he believed, and stood by his beliefs without apology even when they were at odds with pop culture and the people in his field. I disagree with many of his stances, but I respect him for that.
