I'm not sure, and I was wondering that myself.
I think I'm gonna pick one up.

Re: Why is the GeForce 9600GT so cheap?
I can't find any really good info on the GeForce 9 series in general, which leads me to believe that it's mostly a tweak of the existing architecture rather than a radical technology shift (not surprising after the 7-8 jump). It looks like the 9600GT was released because the Radeon HD 3850 was making the 8600GTS (all three being in roughly the same price range) look like a joke. That is, the price you see is exactly what it's supposed to cost.

Re: Why is the GeForce 9600GT so cheap?
How it looks from the benchmarks below, the 8800GT 512MB is better than the 9600GT by a good amount in Stalker; Yet the 9600GT is just slightly better than the 8800GT 256mb.
But notice how the 9600GT ends up getting a better score in 1280x1024 (Without extra AA, etc.) on World in Conflict than the 8800GT 512MB..Hm.
So yeah, I guess I'm going to wait for the 9800 series to start thinking about using my Evga step-up.

Yeah, I was kinda taken by surprise when we just suddenly got that card in at Best Buy. I didn't even know the 9000 series was already on it's way out.

I think I'm gonna pick one up since I had pretty much decided on a 8600GTS, but now I can get the 8800GS for about the same price and get better performance.

Looks to be a good card when you look at real world benchmarks. Video card makers do all kinds of cheats to make their cards perform better in those canned demos.

I didn't mean to suggest that the 9600 is a bad deal, just that the reason for this particular model launching at this particular time is that the 8600 is a bad deal (compared to AMD/ATI's latest, and now also compared to the 9600).

Hijacking the thread a bit... what would be a decent but low budget cheap PCI-E card?
Has to be ok'ed in the OSx86 Wiki's compatibility list, of course...
Let's say, would a 256MB GeForce 7300LE be a good pick?

6200 gs will give you good performance per dollar. Its 19-24 bucks if you shop around and osx loves it.Stormwatch wrote:Hijacking the thread a bit... what would be a decent but low budget cheap PCI-E card?

Why is nVidia 4 years behind ATI? 9600?

Re: Why is the GeForce 9600GT so cheap?
Because ATI have been counting longer. nVidia were making video cards before the GeForce series, and started counting from the first GeForce card.Quzar wrote:Why is nVidia 4 years behind ATI? 9600?

Why is nVidia 4 years behind ATI? I think it's ridiculous.

Actually, they started counting with the first Rage GPU. Radeon was "Rage 6" before they decided on a new brand name.|darc| wrote:ATI made video cards before the first Radeon. It also started counting at the first Radeon card.

Then you can also say that nVidia were counting since NV1.Ex-Cyber wrote:Actually, they started counting with the first Rage GPU. Radeon was "Rage 6" before they decided on a new brand name.|darc| wrote:ATI made video cards before the first Radeon. It also started counting at the first Radeon card.
(Point is, it doesn't matter, and butters responded seriously to a pointless post. )
