Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
What would you guys do if the Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engines were cracked or released?

Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
A few years back I was really into the now cancelled (and for good reason) tv show My Name is Earl. I always thought it would be cool if a game on Earl was made on the Shenmue engine.
I currently think TellTale's conversation system would probably be better.

Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
Nothing? It's not a very good engine is it? Even back in the day it was slow and clunky. I love Shenmue, but more for the story, environments, and atmosphere. I have to admit that the actual gameplay needed some work, and I think it would've been more successful in the hands of a better developer.

Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
It was AM2's first 3D Home Console game.
Since then they have worked on Virtua Fighter RPG, which bombed.

Probably nothing, until you have enough curiosity or interest to mess with that mammoth shit. What would you guys do if the Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engines were cracked or released?
How do I try to build a Dreamcast toolchain:

Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
You mean if the source code was released?
Probably nothing would happen, except maybe some fan edits/continuations/sequels.

It's thinking...
Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
Couldn't we mod and improve the engine or would that be too much work?

Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
Yes you could, but it requires time and some level of expertise.

Wait, are you sure? Wasn't Virtua Fighter RPG the development title of Shen Mue?cube_b3 wrote:It was AM2's first 3D Home Console game.

Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
@ Bogglez: My post merely states AM2 has only released 2 proper home console games. They are primarily an arcade dev team.
In total I know of 3 home console games from there:
Sword of the Vermillion (mediocre)
Shenmue 1 & 2 (cult hit)
Virtua Quest (super bomb)
Also I am fully aware of Shenmue's development whether you call it Virtua Fighter RPG or Project Berkley.

Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
Your posts sound like you think Virtua Quest and Virtua Fighter RPG are the same thing, though. In addition just posting a link without any comment isn't really helpful. So I'm not surprised I'm confused what you're trying to say. Nevermind.cube_b3 wrote:@ Bogglez: My post merely states AM2 has only released 2 proper home console games. Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
What open world engine better suit the dreamcast than shenmue's ?
Can you guys give me a list of all the errors of the
shenmue engine and compare to others?

Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
They did a lot of right things, but in very basic ways, so I think it can be generally improved.. For such an expensive project I found the animation system to be very unimpressive (compare with for example Shadow Man, which has per-vertex skinning so the skin bends around), the texturing is quite awful (textures warp, etc), the lighting was terrible and the loading zones could have been avoided/improved..

Re: Shenmue and Shenmue 2 engine
Shenmue isn't an open-world engine. It's point-and-click adventure with Virtua Fighter strapped on.

If Shenmue was going to be open world on the dreamcast what open world engine would you recommend ?Specially Cork wrote:Shenmue isn't an open-world engine. It's point-and-click adventure with Virtua Fighter strapped on.

Not entirely sure about your question.chao2 wrote:If Shenmue was going to be open world on the dreamcast what open world engine would you recommend ?Specially Cork wrote:Shenmue isn't an open-world engine. It's point-and-click adventure with Virtua Fighter strapped on.
Making Shenmue open-world would completely redefine the game. Outside of the Virtua Fighter action sections and QTEs it's pretty much a classic-style adventure game: progress is made by talking to the right people and collecting/using the right objects. That kind of gameplay works best in small areas.
I guess an open-world Shenmue would end up something like LA Noire - a huge city with not much to do in it, and an arrow constantly ushering you from place to place.
I'm right in thinking that's what you mean by open-world yes? That Ryo could explore a huge chunk of Yokohama, rather than just a couple of streets and the harbor?
If Shenmue really were to be made like that, I'm sure Criterion's Renderware engine would've done the job. It never ran on Dreamcast hardware but probably could've done if it had competed fully with the PS2 as planned.

Yeah that was what I was asking for, sorry if I sounded confusing.
