The Rick Astley Debate
Does he deserve his MTV EMA nomination or has Rickrolling gone too far?
Rick Astley is up for Best Act Ever at the MTV Europe Music Awards this November and it’s certainly causing a lot of debate in offices around the country.
The great man’s nomination seems to be down to the internet phenomenon ’Rickrolling’- where people post his videos and seemingly vote for him to win prizes!
False links to youtube have tricked people into watching his classic 1987 hit Never Gonna Give you Up over 20 million times.
But whether Astley belongs in the same category as Madonna and Green Day has caused controversy.
And with voting for the awards up to the public the Rick-rolling craze looks likely to continue. Who knows if he’ll be taking home one of our prestigious prizes in Liverpool on November 6!

Re: The Rick Astley Debate
He's no more worthy than Green Day or Madonna in my opinion, and at the end of the day it's an MTV EMA - not exactly the most prestigious of music industry awards.
As for the whole Rickrolling thing - it does seem to have gone on well past it's best-before date, but maybe that's just because I'm used to internet memes dieing out pretty quickly. Plus, it seems to be surviving through evolution (like the Barackroll), which I wholeheartedly support. If I was still getting Rickrolled in links I'd be pretty pissed off by now.

As for Green Day, I used to be into them until they changed they're personalities and all that when American Idiot came out.
As for being rickroll'd, I havent been for awhile, then again, I haven't talked to people that rickroll for awhile.
ON ANOTHER NOTE.
Here's my opinion on Donkey Kong Land:

If we are talking sales -- Rick Astley is not in the same category as them.|darc| wrote:But whether Astley belongs in the same category as Madonna and Green Day has caused controversy.
If we are talking quality -- they are not in the same category as Rick Astley!

Re: The Rick Astley Debate
Who gives a shit? No mainstream music awards have mattered in the last 20 years. They always go to whoever the industry pushes as popular or some pretentious crap nobody has ever heard of.
That and MTV never mattered.

Re: The Rick Astley Debate
Riiiight … I agree that MTV has gone done the shitter, but it has had its place. Before we could jump on the Internet and gorge ourselves with endless music, there was the radio, record stores and MTV. Now-a-days, MTV is lost in a sea of vastly superior methods of distribution. However, for my dad back in the early ‘80s, he didn't have much of a choice.AgentGreen wrote:That and MTV never mattered.

U2 are old, Green Day put on a decent live show, Aguilera has a nice set of jugs. They all qualify.Lartrak wrote:Best acts ever? The singer beat U2, Green Day and Christina Aguilera to the gong,
