Computer I Just Built
I've finished building Euclid II, my new computer. Thought I'd share with everyone. Some of you may remember I did a post kind of like this a couple years back.
Under The Hood
AMD Phenom 9950 2.6GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor
MSI K9N2 SLI PLATINUM Motherboard
Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 SDRAM
Case
NZXT Alpha Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600W Power Supply
Video
MSI Radeon HD R4850 512MB Video Card
Acer AL2216Wbd Black 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor
Acer AL1916 Silver 19" LCD Monitors x2
Audio
Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum
Logitech® X530 5.1 Surround Sound [already had this]
Drives
LG Lightscribe HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Super Multi Drive
LG Lightscribe DVD Burner
Seagate Barracuda 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Here's what the setup looks like:
I don't have all three monitors hooked up yet. Right now there's a conflict of drivers that I'm trying to figure out. The onboard is Nvidia but the video card is ATI.

LightScribe is a really cool thing. So much better than printing labels. You have to use a very high contrast for your labels though - but if you do, it looks superb!

Danke. Ja, es ist sehr toll. To me, it has the right balance of style without being too tacky. It comes with 2x 120mm fans and is super quiet and very sturdy. It also came with braces for screwless drive installation, which I appreciate.Maturion wrote:Nice machine! I really like the case.
On the minus side, it's very heavy and a little bit cramped inside. The HDD bays have a unique sideway design which is great for installing drives but takes up extra space. Also, anything with a glossy plastic face can scratch, scuff, and attract fingerprints easily, so I have to be a little more careful.

Re: Computer I Just Built
In setting my new computer up I discovered I seem to have misplaced my DC VGA cable, so I need to look for it. I've also got a devver's serial cable running to the PC (via USB > serial adapter) but haven't tried it out yet to see if it works.hearld500 wrote:Mighty nice sir.
How do you have that dreamcast hooked up btw?
I have black DC hooked up to my living room HDTV via VGA box. This is the seldom used homebrew/devtest unit. (To be honest, I haven't used it in a couple years).

Re: Computer I Just Built
So you bought a 750a SLI (nVidia) motherboard, and then you bought an ATI card...... riiiiiiigghhhhttttt.
Personally, I wouldn't have gone with AMD either. The Phenom is a 65nm chip, which is going to draw more voltage, and run hotter. The bus speed is pretty quick, but in comparison tests it seems AMD is still WAY behind, and four cores aren't exactly necessary. I would have just gone with an 45nm, 1333mhz FB, E8400 and overclocked it to about 4Ghz on air.
But hey, different strokes for different folks. The rest of the setup looks great!

Re: Computer I Just Built
It was a combo deal on NewEgg; about $50 cheaper than any other comparable board/card configuration would've been. But you're still right, I should have noticed.Code-Red wrote:So you bought a 750a SLI (nVidia) motherboard, and then you bought an ATI card...... riiiiiiigghhhhttttt.

Re: Computer I Just Built
I have the same, an nVidia SLI board and ATI card. The nVidia chipsets just tend to have great amounts of features. For me the only alternative was an AMD chipset (my board is already half/half) but that doesn't mean I should stick to nVidia graphics. There are no specific conflicts.Code-Red wrote:So you bought a 750a SLI (nVidia) motherboard, and then you bought an ATI card...... riiiiiiigghhhhttttt.

Re: Computer I Just Built
Yeah, I went the opposite route on the last computer I built and bought an ATI board with a Nvidia card. As long as I don't plan to SLI them, then there's no problem.

Re: Computer I Just Built
It's not really a big deal, if you don't plan on upgrading your graphics via a second card. However, it limits you're ability to do just that. Instead, he's going to have to buy a much better ATI card (or splurge on two nVidia's), which two cheaper cards in Crossfire probably would have matched.|darc| wrote:I, too, have a nVidia mobo and an ATI card. why the big deal?

what is the point of a quad core anyways? I never really understood that.

Sorry, wrong.Hasney wrote:4 cores > 2 cores
Simple as
Until developers even start utilizing 4 cores, it's a moot technology. I'll take an E8400 dual which overclocks and outperforms a Q6600 quad any day. More money saved for better things like videos cards, cooling, and memory.
By my understanding, unless you're doing heavy video editing, extreme multitasking (i.e. playing Crysis and Half Life 2 at the same time), or running Folding@Home it's completely pointless for the time being.Nico0020 wrote:what is the point of a quad core anyways? I never really understood that.

HD video editing, Adobe Creative Suite, ripping DVD's to Divx and running a home media server. Quad FTW.Code-Red wrote:By my understanding, unless you're doing heavy video editing, extreme multitasking (i.e. playing Crysis and Half Life 2 at the same time), or running Folding@Home it's completely pointless for the time being.

May I ask which programs you use actually take full advantage of 4 cores?impetus wrote:HD video editing, Adobe Creative Suite, ripping DVD's to Divx and running a home media server. Quad FTW.

Thanks for re-affirming what I've already said. Two cores is plenty enough, unless your a spider with 4 mice, 4 keyboards, many monitors, and tons of programs open pointlessly.Code-Red wrote:By my understanding, unless you're doing heavy video editing, extreme multitasking (i.e. playing Crysis and Half Life 2 at the same time), or running Folding@Home it's completely pointless for the time being.
