I had bad luck with the 64 version and ended up going back. Compatibility was just too sketchy.

I have XP64 Pro and have nothing but problems, compatibility wise. I'm going to be "upgrading" to Vista 64 ASAP.

I'm running XP64 right now while I wait for my new hard drive to ship. Though I will be getting Vista64 once I get the drive, the XP version hasn't given me any problems whatsoever yet. I have a ton of newer hardware, though, so all of my stuff had 64 bit drivers.

I'm still using the good ole 32-bit version with my AMD 5200 X2. I really don't see any reason to upgrade. I tried Vista for a short time and went immediately back to XP.

Haven't had any issues with XP64. The only problem that I will be looking into is BF1942. Runs HORRIBLY, like .25 FPS...

You can via Wine I believe, but the compatibility and speed I have no idea.

Yes, WINE-based software (Cedega, CrossOver, WINE) should let you play Steam and HL2-based games just fine. Same thing on the Mac.

I don't have a lot of experience using wine. The only thing I use it for is Diablo 2 but it works flawlessly. Its nice to have it windowed and to be able to quickly navigate the cube to and from different tasks while I have it running. Its good shit.

Interesting...actually, I think I just might give this Linux thing a shot. I've always wanted to, but I'm so used to Windows that I wasn't really willing to learn a new OS.

Oh, what about Adobe CS3? It absolutely has to run CS3 as that is really about 1/3 of my computer use right now.

Adobe stuff? Ah, umm... run it on Windows inside VirtualBox? ¬¬

Okay, now seriously. From what I read, Wine's still not very compatible with CS3. You can use a virtualizer, or do a dual boot, to have two systems handy whenever you need.

I doubt he's really going to want to run a virtualizer or dual-boot; at that rate, you might as run Windows full time. A virtualizer might be fine for using something every once in a while, but if 1/3 of his computer use is Photoshop, it looks like he's stuck in Windows.

You might want to give OS X a try though; obviously there's a native (and better imo) version of Photoshop there. And you can still run HL2 and other games with WINE on OS X. You can run OS X on regular PC hardware nowadays, but the driver support is poor. I would really suggest that next time you buy a new PC, build one using all hardware chipsets that are used by Macs or buy one with similar chipsets.

Yeah, that would have been nice. I just didn't know at the time when I bought my computer that OSX was actually running well on PC hardware. But although OSX would be nice, most of my stuff is Windows based, and spending another $180 on the Mac version of CS3 would be pointless.

At any rate, it's not like I'm trying to move away from Windows. I'm one of the few out there that really likes Windows. I just thought it would be fun to try something new. Think I still might try Linux though just for fun, as it would be nice for simple tasks like surfing the internet and such. But I'll probably never move away from Windows because I'm so used to it.

Just want to tinker? No problemo: boot from a Linux liveCD, so you can run it without touching the hard disk.

I could do that, but I have a completely empty hard drive coming in the mail that is begging for something to be installed to it. That, and my DVD drive has given me no end of problems lately. I think it's nearing the end of it's life so the less I use it the better.

Anyway, have any advice on distros? I want the easiest to learn version available, something that makes transitioning from Windows to Linux easy.

Check this thread.

Me, I'd suggest Ubuntu, but I like it precisely because GNOME is less Windows-like than KDE...
