Im sure you can, but why bother hacking up a perfectly good keyboard and mouse when you can just by an adapter for less then $10.

I didnt realize they were that cheap now. I paid $20 for my dc keyboard and $25 for the mouse. On the other hand, I bought a LAN adapter when they were $59, and I could probably sell it on ebay for 3x that, but I dont think I'm gonna anytime soon.

I tink people should stop saying "you can just buy it". This is the Hardware modification forum.

I'm all for modding, but not if it's impractical

modding is what its all about. its better to make things from scratch. well to wired o's like me enjoy it more. sure i can spend $10 on an adapter, but if i build it theres a 40% chance it wont work and a 10% chance it may blow up. now that is what it is all about.

You can get a PS2 to Dreamcast converter from Lik-Sang, but it's 15 dollars, plus the cost of the keyboard. I got the cheap Dreamcast keyboard from Funco Land for 10 dollars and I didn't have to wait for it in the mail.

To answer your original question, no you cannot mod PC Keyboards / Mice to work on a DC.

In order for peripherals to be recognised by the DC they need a special Maple Bus chip, as far as I am aware you cannot buy these chips off the shelf, and even if you could it would be very complex to get it to work.

The converters from Lik-Sang are the only way to get PC stuff to work on the DC.

I hope this helps :)

blowing up

Post by I.M. Weasel »

what happens if the little converter blows up.
is the dc toast?

id rather spend $10 on an adapter and $1.00 on a PC keyboard and mouse(that i can replace )
then $30 for a DC keyboard and mouse.

Besides wait 2 years and you'll be ale to get DC keyboard for $3.00

You need TWO adapters one for the mouse, one for the keyboard.

I paid 10 bucks for a used keyboard at funcoland, but I was pissed to find new ones selling for 10 too at media play, and they had a whole stack of them. 10 bucks for a new dc keyboard? sounds like a deal to me!

True, but if you're into modding, and just want an excuse to mess around, you could hack a dc keyboard into a wave case. Nothing you can do if you want the laser mouse though.
