Different DC internal components...

Post by Morphv2 »

Noticing the changes in the DC hardware itself (Rev0,1,2), I have begun to look at the actual components, and found they are also different.

I am trying to compile a list of components that came in different DCs, to see which ones overclock and or run better.

Notice I only listed the main components. ThisThese are some of my many DC's (or just motherboards) that I have, and will edit this article the more I list. I would be much appreciative if anyone else with the time to kill will also leave their component specifications.

Lets say someone left a component list that matches someone elses, and it was a dominant overclocker, then the other person knows he/she could very well have flexibility in the event they wish to try.

The "VG" RAM chips are Vanguard (abbreviated VIS or VISC - Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation). Homepage is here.

Thanks! I couldn't find it, so I had to settle for the erroneously long parenthesis statement. That concise's (not a word) this better.

I started a page like this a few months ago at dc-scene.

http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/index.ph ... eRevisions

I always meant to go through more of my DCs (since I have about 20 or so motherboards) but never did. Here's a bit of info though: there are two sets of main changes that happen that are not associated with the 'revX' changes, they were the upgrading of the SH4 from the initial version to the 'R' version and a change in the PVR numbering.

The following are the differences (major) between the three revs

Rev0: Heatpipe version. On the motherboard there is a two pin connector for a temperature sensor. The controller port board is different from the following two revs because the heatpipe fan uses only two pins, this controller board allows the DC to boot without a fan attached unlike newer revisions (either that or visa versa, I can't quite remember atm)

Rev1: Most common DC. No more temperature sensor, giant plate as a heatsink, and seperate black fan with a 3 pin controller.

Rev2: Most rare and sought after DC. This Dreamcast motherboard sports the most drastic change of the three, the GD-Rom controller board is built onto the board. You will see three new connectors on the motherboard, one for the GD ribbon cable, one for the GD power, and the last for the door open/close switch. This revision uses the same controller port board as the Rev1.

I've been interested in doing this whole thing for a good deal of time. I think though that the table needs to be tweaked a bit to be readable and needs a visual with circles over the components that are being listed or something like that. If anyone wants to try to update a site with that, I'd gladly dig up a bunch of boards to put up the numbers.

lulz, odd. A GameCrazy near me has about 4. I buy up any non Rev2's, since I mess around with them. Also, I just traded for a launch Dreamcast (I mean a LAUNCH Dreamcast, 9-9-99) that still works. I plan on dissecting that as well.

Also, thanks for the bump people. Quzar, even tho my attention span gave out a lot in your post, whatever you want to set up, I'm game. I would like to say, is that I am trying to get every major component listed. From every year etc. This way, we might be able to find an overall coorelation.

I've never been able to push a rev 2 DC past ~220 MHz.

I've never even bothered. The Rev0 DC I just got is very promising. Heatpipe cooling, revised SH4, and 8ns memory across the board.

I've never found a Rev 0 dreamcast to test unfortunately. I've found 7321037 revision 1s and 3 rev 2s.

I eBay, trade on a few websites, and have a couple of good game shops nearby. So I have a nice selection of consoles to choose from.

However, rob if you ever find yourself with an open DC just sitting around, try listing the components. Heck, the machines you have successful overclocks on, tell us those and we will have a good idea of what to look for!
