Recommend some Scary/horror/thriller Movies.

Post by compacho »

I remember when I was a kid, I used to get so terrified at the site of Jason. Freddy Krugor, and even Chuckie. The one that kept me awake at nights the most was the Crypt Keeper. As I got older, I stop watching those type of movies. Its not because it was scary, I just didn't find them interesting. Pretty much, I skipped horror/scary films for a long time.

One day, while picking up some DVDs at Walmart, cause TV sux now, I decided to test out Signs. And man, I wasn't disappointed. This movie was the first movie to ever get me scared, nervous, and paranoid in my adult life. Yeah, I know, some people didn't find it scary but I have a thing for aliens and UFOs i guess.

Naturally, I decided to pick up some more of M. Night's films like the Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. I also picked up the Ring. I can't believe how many people find The Ring scary. I find it more disturbing than scary. I also got The Exorcist. Pretty scary at some points. But it doesn't have enough elements to keep me coming back for more.

So far, Signs is my top choice. What other movies should I pick up? I'll prolly pick up The Village despite the bad reviews its gotten.

Is Psycho or Scream any good? I want a film that doesn't have any of those cheap scares like playing music loud out of no where and the classic "camera creeping up on a charactor to attack only to reveal that it's just a friend" trick.

Thanx in advance.

Scream is okay. Not extremely scary, but it has its moments.

I recommend some classic Stephen King movies, i.e. The Shining and It if you can. I don't watch many horror films, but Stephen King is the bomb diggity.

i hope you read this before you make any reckless decisions.

DO NOT RENT/BUY/GO WITHIN TEN FEET OF ''THE VILLAGE''

it's NOT a horror movie in my opinion, and whatever the fuck it is its the most bullsh1t movie i've ever seen.

my suggestion is ''My Little Eye''. I had problems sleeping after that one. It's really disturbing.

Heh, my mom rented it and said the exact same thing. She said not only was it scary, it was really hard to understand and the ending was too open, and not the kind that leave you wanting more, but the kind leaving you wondering wtf just happened.

I also recommend the Final Destination films. I've seen FD1 edited on USA and I've seen the first half of FD2, and just the first half of FD2 gave me nightmares. I prefer FD1 by far, though. Better story and they don't go over the top with the gore and killings like in the sequel. I think they went a little too far in the sequel, killing the little kid, leaving you feeling sorry for the sobbing mother, only to have her killed in a gruesome way as well. The director earned his own special place in hell with that movie.

I can safely say that the last 20 minutes of carry are some of the best in any horror film, especially a certain scene literaly *exists* to make you dizzy before chucking sweetness at you, and I will never think of the lord's prayer the same way again.

If you like a nice scary/creepy movie try The Innocents. It's from the 60s and the packaging probably makes it look silly, but it does a great job creating a creepy atmosphere that doesn't let up until the very end...

Tried looking for the innocents but it doesn't seem like it hasn't been released on DVD yet.

I saw Final Destination already. Though a good movie, it's hardly scary IMO.

Psychologically.

Also, go for the classic Psycho.... more disturbing and suspenseful than actually scary, but such a great film :)

Any more psychological scary movies? Event Horizon is a good one.

I would suggest the house on haunted hill remake, still creeps me out to see it and the early hellraiser movies (1& 2, the rest suck) I remeber watching them as a kid and when i would go to bed i would always think the lil box was in the corner of my room....
also get "audition" great japanese horror

Event Horizon is still pretty gory though. :) I remember that movie only because it has Jack Noseworthy... my pointless crushes are numerous. :(

Its not scary in the slightest, but Fallen is a supernatural thriller starring Denzel Washington, John Candy and Donald Sutherland (together at last!) that is possibly the most under rated film I have ever seen in my life - it is superb, and I have no idea why it wasn't a huge hit like Sixth Sense or something was :dontknow:

Anyone seen Hitchcock's Psycho or The Birds? If you did, do they hold up well even today?

Poltergeist
Event Horizon, as already mentioned
April Fools Day
Saw, just came out recently. Not very scary but you could say it's a thriller, damn good film to watch.
