This is something I followed closely as well, Ghostbusters being one of my absolute favorite things as a little kid (first movie came out the year after I was born).Skynet wrote:I wanted a new ghostbusters movie to come out but it never did
I remember hearing something about a new ghostbusters coming out too, a few years back mind you.
There were too many problems. First off, GB2 got a fairly cold public reception...and it hasn't aged well. The first movie is a classic and always will be regarded as such, both for its intrinsic value, and as one of the final hurrah's of optical effects work right before everything went digital. But GB2 was widely seen as a prime example of "sequel syndrome."
Then there's casting. Sigourney Weaver refused to do it; she hated working with Ramis, Murray and Aykroyd. (Apparently Lt. Ripley sees herself as too much of a "serious actor" for such tomfoolery ). Bill Murray didn't want to do it. He agreed to do a cameo if the movie got shot (he was going to call in and talk about how he eloped with Dana, or something like that).
Third, there's the script itself. How many uber-catastrophies can hit New York? The final premise that was settled on had something to do with a New York/Hell dimensional parallel, if I recall.
And that third point is where it died. Aykroyd took the script to Columbia (who produced the other two Ghostbusters features) in 1999, and a decision was set to be made by February 2000. Apparently, by the lack of any news after that, it was rejected. Aykroyd then went on to do the horrific "Evolution," which very much had a "budget Ghostbusters" feel to it...with the same style of gags, structure and action...but none of the originality and charm of the former film.
I very seriously doubt there will be another Ghostbusters movie, and I think it's (unfortunately) something that is better off being left to Rest In Peace. And I say that as a lifetime Ghostbusters fan.
