Crappy Emus

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

To be honest, I ran dreamsnes on my DC when it first came out (YEARS AGO) and I couldnt deal with the choppy framerate. I told myself to wait a few years... Has anything less frustrating come out?

Not for SNES emulation. Many other system are emulated very well and wery smoothly on the Dreamcast--even the Neo Geo--but the SNES has been a sticking point for some reason.

DreamSNES v0.9.8

Burn with EU PAL games. They're 20% faster than US and JP games, which is why they run fullspeed.

Good one.

I would recommend to put up a disc with SNES4All, Super Famicast v1 + v2, and DreamSNES v0.9.8 via SBInducer.

They're 20% slower, thus making the emulator having to render 20% less, making it easier to get fullspeed. At least that's what I always thought.

Yeah, I meant to add that that it depends on your point of view.

Some more detailed explanation:

PAL games by Nintendo, Rare, Infrogrames, and other good European distributors and developers are 20% faster because their speed has been modified/optimized to match 50Hz. On DreamSNES these actually would ran smoother yet also faster than the US/JP versions of the same games.

Playing these games will offer 100% full speed emulation with very little frameskipping.

European PAL releases by smaller Japanese or American companies with small or bad European distributors miss the speed modification for the 60Hz -> 50Hz difference, thus they will run smoother with DreamSNES, but actually are slower than their US/JP original on a real machine.

Playing these games on DreamSNES will offer 100% speed with very little frameskipping but they'll be still be slower than on a real American or Japanese SNES.

Now that is the most complete explanation I've seen, kudos :) I think you should certainly add that to a sticky thread about Dreamsnes, or put it into one of the FAQ's.

Good idea. I think there still are very few people that actually know about this.

Started spreading the info with Dreamcast-Scene.com's Wiki:

I finally understand the whole PAL/NTSC deal. Someone should update the sticky with this info.
