Woman fired after seeing husband off to Iraq

Post by melancholy »

Yahoo wrote:A woman who took an unpaid leave of absence from work to see her husband off to war with an Indiana National Guard unit has been fired after failing to show up for her part-time receptionist job the day following his departure.

Officials at her former workplace, Benefit Management Administrators Inc., a Caledonia employee-benefits company, confirmed that Boler was dismissed when she didn't report to work the day after she said goodbye to her husband of 22 years.

"We gave her sufficient time to get back to work," Clark Galloway, vice president of operations for Benefit Management, told The Grand Rapids Press for a story Wednesday.

Boler recalled being asked, not ordered, to start back at her job Oct. 17, the day after her husband left. She told her bosses that she would try to return that day but if she could not, she would definitely be back Oct. 18, she said.

But on the afternoon of Oct. 17, she received a call from work telling her to come in the following day and get her things because she was being fired. Her pink slip said the reason was she failed to show up for work Oct. 17, a Monday.

I'm sorry, but I don't see why she should need the day after he left as well.

Sad; I was against this war from the beginning......and glad that I didn't make it through basic training and gotten stuck over there

Off topic but I heard on the radio the other day that 2,001 soldiers have died in iraq since the war has started and some have compared this war to vietnam.

There's also that woman whose son died in iraq that has talked to bush and is tying herself to the fence on the white house til she talks to him again. fukken crazy.

Whether she needs the day off or not isnt the problem. If he version of events is true than firing her is wrong anyway.

If they had told her that she had to come in, and she would be fired if she didnt, then perhaps they would have a point. But from what she is saying, they didnt do these things. But of course she could just be lieing...

Also, what kind of company fires you for not turning up once? Must be one crappy job.

Most jobs are employment-at-will. Both the employee and the employee can cease the relationship at any given time without prior warning and for no reason whatsoever.

The boss didn't like it that she was gone and ceased their relationship. Ethical? No. Legal? Yes.

Wow. American labour laws suck. Firing somebody without giving a reason over here is pure lawsuit fodder.

Yes, less than 2% of the American troops have died since March 19th., 2003. Some Vietnam, isn't it?

Yeah, I think it's a pretty faulty comparison also. There's some parallel... It's like Vietnam if there was 1/10th of the resistance, and 1/10th the anger at home about it. In other words, I just don't see it
How to be a Conservative:
You have to believe everything that has ever gone wrong in the history of your country was due to Liberals.

You mean, like the beginning of Vietnam?

Look at America's involvement in Vietnam as a whole, then take a look at the Iraqi occupation, which we are only a couple of years into. Rummy himself said the war isn't anywhere near finished. Up to 12 more years, didn't he say?
Where's toastman? I'm bored.

Yeah america sucks for employment, I was hired for inventory and at the end of the second day they let me go. for no reason! I did my job, I followed orders and after I got everything down..they let me go. here is how it happend. I went down to the managers office after they paged me to go there and I was thinking "ok...." I went there and he was on the phone and when he got off he was like "I am sorry, but I am afraid I have to let you go" I am like "why what did I do?" and then I get some "by law I don't have to give you a reason" and I am replied "well that is bullshit, fuck you and this job, I hope you all go rot in hell you N*****s" I got pissed and they escorted me off the place. Sadley that is how it is here in good ol U.S of Crap.
