domain names

Post by Covar »

ok so i recently setup an apache server and now am looking for a domain name, i just have several questions.

A) what's the cheapest place to register a name?
B) once i get the name how do i tell it to point to my server?
C) do i need to configure apache for the domain name?
D) if so, how?

if anyone could answer these, i would be very thankful

if you want to be atleast haf-way professional with the site, go with a real domain and no a .tk. .tk domains are nothing more than frameset pages to hide your sites real url. and they also add popups to the whole mess.

for me, ive been pretty happy with speedydomainregistration.com. although it doesnt look pro, i have yet to have a single problem with them. but im sure you can find cheaper places.

as for pointing it to your server, you will need to go to a place like everydns.net and set up your domain with their nameservers to point it to your ip (if dynamic, you can do that to with their updater program

unless you plan on having anything special like subdomains or whatnot, you dont need to set anything special in apache.

on a side note, i did something like you earlier this week. i got tired of going through so many hosts in a short period only for them to be unreliable as all get out (server goes down every other day >.< ), so i decided to self host my sites. between of apache2triad and everydns.net, my site is now selfhosted on the second computer in the house, running apache/php/mysql/mail/ftp and a fully working domain and subdomain. and our connection uses a dynamic ip address, but with their ip updater for windows, its set in windows task scheduler to update every half an hour. my site is located @ http://www.pokeradio.com , and the subdomain (albeit limited access), is at http://ponline.pokeradio.com/

I use DynDNS. You might be able to configure your router to login automatically.

yeah. dyndns is good. i have been using it for a while and its the best ive seen. and as roofus, stated, most routers you can set to automatically update the ip on your dyndns account without needing a updater client on the pc. and no POPUPS

I always use godaddy.com
When you register, setting to where the domain points will be self-explanitory.
You dont NEED to config apache for the domain; it will work w/o changing the config. However, its nice to. If you look in the config you just edit whatever applies to the domain (should be easy for the beginner).

Once you get that stuff figured out, http://www.zoneedit.com is your friend. gl

Anyone else with Comcast and is supposed to have a dynamic IP, but the damn thing never changes? Mine hasn't changed in a year or so.

I got my domain with GoDaddy, they are l33t.

I used easyregistarar.com I think. I always forget till I get the email to pay for the span. But don't use a .tk. Just google for a decent deal.
