What about this or this? I mean, they stayed true to their roots for the most part, but these two songs are embarrassing.Luriden wrote:I wouldn't put The Offspring down as a guilty pleasure, they're one of the best pop punk bands around (and there's not many around anymore, most pop punk bands have converted to emo). Their last album stayed true to their roots instead of converting to emo crap like every other pop punk band that's still making music did, which I thought was very cool.

The acting is generally terrible, but the movies always seem to be entertaining.Code-Red wrote:Yea, I'm a big sucker for Blood Sport. Terrible acting, but he's a beast in that movie.curt_grymala wrote: Jean Claude Van Damme movies
I refuse to watch anything with Steven Seagall (little Stevie Siegel), though. I can't stand him for some reason.
Emphasis on the "pop". They're about as punk as No Doubt is ska or Mr. Big was metal. I'm not saying that I don't occasionally enjoy listening to The Offspring's music, but it bothers me when people classify them as punk.I wouldn't put The Offspring down as a guilty pleasure, they're one of the best pop punk bands around

Re: Stupid Things You Like Anyway
I feel silly continuing to discuss Offspring as they aren't even one of my favorite bands, but I think that calling them punk around the first 2 albums would be reasonably accurate. They turned pop on Smash, though it still had a strong punk influence. It was all downhill after Americana.curt_grymala wrote:Emphasis on the "pop". Again, I'm not trying to stand up for them or their music, just discussing.

I wouldn't even call Ignition real punk. But their self-titled album is definitely punk.S. Re: Stupid Things You Like Anyway
Well The Offspring have more "punk" influence than any other mainstream band on the radio today imo. Even with the more-than-occasional power ballad or pop hit, more than half of every album they've put out since they first started has had a punk sound.
And honestly, if it's too punk (or you might call it, "REAL punk") I won't even listen to it. Fuck The Sex Pistols, I like the vocalist to have at least SOME singing talent and throw in some hooks here and there to keep my attention. And I don't care about your cause or beliefs, I want good music. "Trust In You" off the new Offspring album is a perfect example of exactly what I've loved about the band since I first heard them years ago when Smash came out. Not much has changed with them over the years (unless you look at the singles, which have always been the ugly ducklings on all their albums), but that's a good thing considering where rock music is headed today.

The Ramones are fun, as long as you don't listen to too much at once. It does get a bit repetitive after a while, but they're not bad songs.Luriden wrote:I edited it for you, I had a feeling I would piss a few people off.Jeeba Jabba wrote:Luriden wrote:Fuck The Ramones,

I really like the first three Offspring records, but tbh I never really listened to the ones that came after these.|darc| wrote:I wouldn't even call Ignition real punk. Still, I think it's hard to classify what Punk actually is, and even harder to imagine where we would be without it. DIY pretty much has turned things upside down. Punk is definitely more than just a way to compose, play or record your music.
Here are some good books on this topic that I recently ordered:

Re: Stupid Things You Like Anyway
That TI song "Whatever You Like" (god what a piece of catchy shit).
And the Offspring is the evolution (or maybe just a side-tree...) of punk -- more pop-ish. For better (Ignition, Ixnay on the Hombre) or for worse (that godawful piece of recycled bullshit that was their last album).
Offspring: Punk as John Mayer: Blues
