What can cause computer fans to stop?

Post by butters »

My processor fan and case fan on my desktop PC have gone out. Does this sound like a PSU or a mobo problem? I'm not terribly good at diagnosing hardware failures.

Check the cables? Try another connector.

It could just be a motor burn out...Are you sure the fan is working? Also what Xylene said.

Two different fans connected two different ways. I've tried using a different connector for the case fan. The processor fan plugs into the motherboad, and it works sporadically.

No, believe it or not, sticking gum in there will hurt your computer. Just a heads up.

It's been running for over a year now. I doubt that's the case. I'm really betting a rail has gone out on my PSU.

you're joking, right? anyway, the fans have probably been limping for a while and you havent noticed. those things probably dont get very many breaks. not to mention the dust accumulation. it shouldnt be a suprise that all fans need to be replaced every now and then. im about to do mine in the next few days too.

But two at once? Hmm....I'm just trying to figure out if it's the fans or the power supply to swap out first. Fans are cheaper....
