Music?

Post by stagg »

I want to listen to more music, I really like the song from the Gears of War commercial. I want more.. mellow? Music, I like rap, but I am getting bored. I'm getting bored listening to everything on MTV, and shit. I want more underground songs, but I do not want emo bands. No "Hellogoodbye" Or "Fallout Boy, or another pussy bands.

If you want a rock band that's different, listen to The Fall.

If you want a genre that's different, listen to bebop, which is a type of jazz. Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Art Blakey (considered hardbop, which is basically bebop but at faster tempos), Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, etc, etc.

You mean this.

that was old music, I think.

Simon and Garfunkel had a similar sound, but they are a bit more upbeat.

I think darc's list is a good starting point if you have any interest at all in the pseudo-genre of "classic rock". Particular such bands I'd recommend based on the video (presuming that lackofsense got the right one) would be Tears for Fears; Toto; Crosby, Stills Nash (and Young). As for songs I can think of a couple that don't necessarily fit with the overall style of the band but that you might like:

Grand Funk Railroad - I'm Your Captain / Closer to Home
Rise Against - Swing Life Away (actually a modern punk band, but there it is)
Styx - Boat on the River

Try listening to Ben Folds and Ben Folds Five. Definately 'mellow' depending on the album. A ton of albums are out, so that should keep you busy for a while if you discover you like it.

That Gears of War song is Mad World by Gary Jules, not the Tears for Fears version (which sucks). It's available on the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

Thought of a couple other particular suggestions in the "mellow rock" vein:

Extreme - More Than Words
Queensryche - Silent Lucidity

No idea how I neglected these before, heh.
