Male Contraceptive on its way

Post by pixel »

Biology News Net wrote: Tyler Dunlap, a 27-year-old newlywed in San Francisco, is just one of the many American men eagerly awaiting the results of a large clinical trial in India.

The trial is studying a new male contraceptive, RISUG (Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance): a reversible, nonhormonal contraceptive that provides 10 or more years of protection after a 10-15 minute procedure. Researchers received approval this week to begin enrolling additional study volunteers, after a delay of nearly four years.

"RISUG would be exciting because it would mean that, finally, I could take control of my own future, instead of leaving it to someone else," says Dunlap. "Being in a committed long-term relationship means that I don't want to rely on condoms for birth control. I'm not ready for a vasectomy, though. This new procedure could be the answer that gives men the decisive control we lack with current contraceptives."

In the RISUG study, doctors inject a gel into the tube that sperm travel through after they are produced (known as the vas deferens). The gel then disables the sperm as they swim by. In study animals, male fertility returns if the RISUG is flushed out with another injection that dissolves the gel.

Interesting... But I think I'd wait to see if people wind up with serious abnormalities before I try it...

Aye, also don't know if I like the idea of some chemical (gel) laying inside me. No telling what the long term effects of that could be.

Never mind that. I hate thinking of ways they might get the goo into my pipes. It can't be comfortable.

Not always, and when there is goo in those pipes, it travels out rather than in.

When or if this ever becomes proven safe, this will be revolutionary. I know I would sign up when that day comes.

I know I'd do it.

I don't want to imagine little Ned's running around.

This will just encourage male promiscuity.

I'm thankful I'll never have to worry about impregnating someone because that makes me uncomfortable thinking about it :blinkeek:

And condoms, sponges, diaphragms, spermicide, the pill and vasectomies haven't?

Well, it might to the degree that condoms require some storage requirements whereas a decomissioned penis doesn't. Condoms are probably the only effective contraceptive that has male responsibility.

Abstanance is 100% effective, but it's not "Safe sex." It's not sex at all.

(when i was in school we had a speaker come in about "Safer sex" i.e. abstanance. What a stupid way to present such a topic.)

This is awesome news, but 10 years at a time feels like an awful lot of time to not be able to have kids. I'd rather use something more BCP-like.

10 years is the amount of time it takes for the substance to leave on its own. I think the article said there's a way for a doctor to flush it out early if you want.
