What does FDISK stand for ?

I go with 16-bit's answer. Yup I remember one time a loooong time ago I ended up somehow only getting 22 megs out of a 2 gig HD and was scared to death i had tore it up lol. I talked to a sysop at a local BBS (this was before internet) and he talked me through how to work it.

Yeah. It's Fixed Disk(s) cause it only works on hard drives.

I hear the disk in it dosen't actually mean disk though, FDISK all stands for something.

No, it stands for Fixed Disk.

Microsoft's fdisk formats, the Unix fdisk just partitions, and you use something like mkreiserfs to make the filesystem (format).

Wait, MS FDISK formats?
The old one from win32 (98 first edition) didn't. It would tell me to restart the machine after disk operations had taken place then format the partition later on.

FDISK doesn't format the harddrive. It is used to partition the harddrive.

The 'F' in FDISK stands for Fixed Disk

Fidsk also has a number is "secret" undocumented switches as well:

FDISK /MBR - Command used to rewrite the Master Boot Record.
FDISK /CMBR <DISK> - Recreate Master Boot Record on specified disk. Performs the same functions as FDISK /MBR except can be used on other disk drives.
FDISK 1/PRI:100 - Command line to create a 100 meg DOS partition on hard drive 1.
FDISK 1/EXT:500 - Command line to create a 500 meg extended DOS partition on hard drive 1.
FDISK 1/LOG:250 - Command line to create a 250 logical drives.
FDISK /PARTN - Saves the partition to a file called PARTSAV.FIL
FDISK /Q - Prevents fdisk from booting the system automatically after exiting fdisk.
FDISK /STATUS - Shows you the current status of your hard drives.
FDISK /ACTOK - Makes FDISK not check the disk integrity allowing the drives to be created faster.
FDISK /FPRMT - Will not get the prompt for FAT32 support, in addition allows FDISK to be forced into using FAT32 on drives smaller then 540MB (by default FDISK will not use FAT32 on any drive smaller then 540MB). Finally this command can only be used with FDISK that supports FAT32.
