Genesis Plus / DC

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Genesis Plus / DC

Post by BlackAura »

I've just released my port of Genesis Plus, which I've been working on for about a week and a half.

The default theme included was made by politoe. Of the 7 people who voted on the theme, four of them chose this theme. So here it is. I'll convert the themes made by -=DC_Zach=-, Chrisfbt1, impetus and area and upload them a little later.

Compatability is good - it only fails to run two games (Altered Beast, Alex Kidd) out of the seventy or so that I tested on it. Of course, that's nothing at all to do with me.

Speed is OK. It varies depending on the games and settings, but tends to be around half speed. Frameskipping above 2 seems to make pretty much no difference - it just makes the game a lot jumpier.

Graphics - Full screen, minor palette and masking errors, and some screen corruption at the bottom due to a bug in the DMA code. I presonally would rather put up with the corruption, since using DMA gives a reasonable speed increase.

On the negative side - there is no sound.,I couldn't get the second controller to work for some weird reason, you can't always swap discs, and the GUI is a little quirky in places.

What else... It has a themable GUI, and supports zipped ROMs, as well as standard uncompressed BIN and SMD files. I've not tested it with any SMD files, since I don't have any, but I assume they work.

Hmm.. That's got to be some kind of record. Less than an hour until someone asks for an SBI.

I'll see if I can do one, but I'm not promising anything. I've not used Selfboot Inducer since version 1.

Edit - I can't find any information on the newer SBI format. I guess I'll have to download some and disect them

SBI 2.1 Package - It's untested, and it's the first SBI I've actually made. It should work though.

:o what a great work black aura!
i' ve tested some games and they all work at a playable speed (dynamite heady, sonic 1 ,sonic 2, street of rage 2 and 3,golden axe 2,street fighter 2 prime, columns 3 and other...)
I don't know if it is a dream but if you set the processor emulation speed at lower value the emulation is more speed!!!!

Keep up the good works black aura...a little speed increase, the sound and your emulator will be perfect :D

Whoa this is very nice news indeed! It seems amazing to be a first public release of Genesis+.

Btw how it possible to have zipped rom support in Genesis roms but not in Dreamsnes? Isn't those roms pretty much same size? :?:

Good job BlackAura thx

It is possible for DreamSNES to have zip support.. The coders just aren't interested in doing it..

Ohh man what an awesome emulator!! The first release is way better than what I thought it would be. I think you're being a little modest, but I don't know.. I'm pretty excited.

Good luck on the emulator. Thanks.
