top ten hidden gems

Post by Bluce_Ree »

Translated;

what ten games do you feel were under-rated so dont be including Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Soul Calibur et al... I'm talking games like this...

1. Sports Jam - The best multi-event game ever.
2. Godzilla Generations - The first Rez...
3. Revolt - especially in multiplayer
4. Super Puzlle Fighter 2 - better than the PSX version
5. Gunbird 2 - okay, it's stupid... but 50%? that's a tad harsh!
6. Dave Mirra - I love the Tony Hawks games but this stands up to them.
7. Beserk Gut's Rage - I prefer this to Devil May Cry.
8. Trickstyle - a bit too addictive for my liking!
9. Death Crimson - it's sharp and fast-paced. Certainly playable.
10. Deadly Skies - as good as Ace Combat on the PSX.

I got Death Crimson that games sucks big time! ITs just another Area 51 clone if you ask me. Thats probably why it was 10 bucks new at Babbages.

D2 for Dreamcast was good but the final battle and ending really sucked since they made no sense.

Ok, in defense of Blue Stinger, I would have to say that it missed the boat in several areas (poor dubbing and lip synchronizing...reminds me of some of those old kung-fu movies where the mouth is still moving but nothing is being said...the camera was generally sucky half the time...the character model for the heroes looked worse than the enemies and the npc...), but I would have to say that there is still some fun to be had with the game. I just started playing it for the first time about a week ago, and I guess I am about half way through based upon what I have read from a guide from Game Faqs. From what I have played of the game, the world feels much bigger than playing through Resident Evil 1, and I do like the fact that you can switch between characters quite easily. Also, the two main characters of Elliott and Dogs offer different strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, I like the fact that you can spend your time beating the crap out of the freaks to earn money and buy what you want from the market. Also, there are plenty of places to save your game an unlimited number of times and areas to download maps (although I haven't really used the feature all that much). Due to the games shortcommings, many have reviewed this game and given it average to poor scores; but I really believe that if the camera issue was fixed and the character models and animation were improved, this game could have garnered atleast a good to very good score yet still not as good as let us say Resident Evil: Code Veronica.

Some other games that I have enjoyed that have not received much attention or respect include Alien Front Online (the graphics are crisp and the action is intense even if it is an arcade game), Ooga Booga (that game is hillarious to play and offers a host of different games to play at your next house party), Floigan Brothers (the closest thing to actually playing a Saturday morning cartoon meets the Little Rascals).

Alien Front Online (nice arcade game, I picked it up last week)
Gunbird 2 (it's short but the gameplay is great)
Streetfighter 3 Third Strike (one of my favortie fighters of al time)
Ecco The Dolphin (although it was recieved OK at it's release, it got hammered afterwards)
Outtrigger (mainly because it did not feature any online services)
Rival Schools 2 (another great fighter)

How about Headhunter?

A lot of people heard of it, but never got to play it.

It's been compared to MSG, and Resident Evil. Actually, it takes the best parts from those games and from Shenmue, and combines them into a solid, intense game that stands on its own.

It achieves that "suspension of disbelief" that I never got from Resident Evil, due to its horrible control. You really feel the excitement of being a badass, renegade cop. Plus, it's got that spooky X-Files feel...

It keeps you on your toes the whole time, instead of giving you that Resident Evil crap: "O.K, now I'm going to go through that door, and I'll face a freakin' monster with 3 bullets left, and my crappy knife, I'm gonna get killed, and I'll have to start all over again..." NOT my idea of fun...

If you don't have it, you should get it. My cousin, who is a cop, loves it...

Why would they compare it to Madison Square Garden?

I never bought this game because I didn't have a keyboard, but I have played it. Typing of the Dead. It's actually fun. If you can even find it anymore and you have a keyboard, you should try it. It's like House of the Dead 2.

No no Trey Day, you mean....

Mono-Sodium Glutamate

.... the most popular food preservative that it used to keep food fresh
but the food isn't really fresh.

It is a good analogy, but I would have probably guessed Metal Gear Solid...

Only playing. Yes, it is definitely a great game, but not one that I would put down as saying that it was underrated. It just came out really late in the game and only in 1 out of 3 major gaming markets. If it would have come out earlier (perhaps shortly after MGS 2), I could see how it could have been Sega's answer to Konami's lack of support. It got great reviews for both the Dreamcast and PS2 versions. I am actually kind of curious as to the number of copies sold.

I think Headhunter is a bit too big a release for this kind of list but it is a great game. I got through a couple of missions and then left it for a few months. I reloaded it this week and was amazed by the graphics. I prefer it to MGS on the psx because you seem a bit more agile in it and the ducking behind cover during a firefight moments are great.
