Wordpress Question
So I've had a blog at wordpress.com for almost a year now.
I was think of moving it out of wordpress and onto my own domain.
I know most people just download the software from wordpress.org and export their entire blog on to a new website.
Wordpress.com offers an alternative, pay them 13$ a year and they will essentially move your blog to your domain name.
Any downsides in that option?

Re: Wordpress Question
How many entries do you currently have? I would do the legwork and just manually move everything over to my own database or something. A reoccurring charge of even $13 seems excessive for what they'd be offering.cube_b3 wrote:Wordpress.com offers an alternative, pay them 13$ a year and they will essentially move your blog to your domain name.

Re: Wordpress Question
$13/year wouldn't be bad if you had to have your own domain already. Basically they're charging you for the privilege of them letting you point your own domain to their site. That's a bit excessive.
But the alternative, getting your own webhost with database support, would be much more expensive over the course of a year, like $100, although it would give you a ton more flexibility to do much more than just a blog.

1 About Me
2 Blog < 20 Posts, so far.
Yeah, basically 13$ annually for mapping my blog to my domain (I assume it does hosting though the word isn't actually used by them).|darc| wrote:$13/year wouldn't be bad if you had to have your own domain already. Currently www.age-media.net redirects to strangelinguistics.wordpress.com, it kind of sucks cause I can't really link the URL for a particular post proudly when talking about my blog. I have to embed it.
In hindsight, it would've been cheaper to buy the domain name from them cause then I would've had everything for 18$ a year. My domain registration costs me 20$ (I own .net & .org) and then 13$ for mapping/hosting. I discovered that a bit late, and I don't think they would've sold me multiple domain names like Godaddy.
They do have a 99$ Bundle as well which has
+ Custom Design (I will need that eventually)
+ Video Press (why would I prefer this over YouTube?)
+ 10GB of Space (I guess that's cool)
+ No Ads (I can't see any ads on Wordpress blogs to begin with?)
+ Domain and Mapping
Given that I own the domain name I might get 5$ off.

Upon Googling I discovered coupons.
75% off on Go Daddy, I do not know if this will work. It says for single domain.
Go Daddy did email me a 25% off coupon which I think will work on renewals.
I also found a 50% off Wordpress coupon, I wonder if it would work.

Re: Wordpress Question
That's quite a ripoff for what you get, they likely make a lot of money from people who want to set up a WordPress blog but won't know how to configure anything, and I guess for that it's a decent value. But consider that I pay about $95 a year for the hosting package that DCEmu is on, and I host a lot more than just DCEmu on it. I use a separate registrar for the domain, but if I went through the same company it would be $100/year for domain, unlimited space webhosting, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited domain mappings, automatic backups, FTP, CGI, SSL, perl, php, ruby, etc., unlimited SQL databases, automated WordPress configuration, pop3/imap/web email, analytics, limited shell access, and much more...cube_b3 wrote:They do have a 99$ Bundle as well which has

Re: Wordpress Question
It's probably a vps and more geared to porn sites ( video press ). Most of what I see get installed with wordpress these days are porn linking sites that link to others. The price 99$ isn't bad unless you are needing support or want to do anything special with the box.

Re: Wordpress Question
I don't really know much about VPSs, but $99 a year for a VPS just to host a WordPress blog? That's very cheap for a VPS but what's the point of having a VPS if you don't have access to anything?

Re: Wordpress Question
I don't know what VPS is?
Video Press Service?
Infact I did not understand most of the acronyms you used except FTP. It is always nice to have an Ftp.

Re: Wordpress Question
VPS is a virtual server. I.g. it's just a vm on some type of hypervisor server. Quick and easy to deploy and for simple things like wordpress and they usually have more than enough power for that.

Re: Wordpress Question
One of the biggest draws of a VPS is usually that you have complete control over everything in the VM, including what packages are installed on the OS and such. For instance, my PSO server runs on a VPS. I have root access to the OS and can control what packages are needed and update the software as I see fit.
