...my friend needs some good audio recording software, kinda like Audacity where it allows you to plug in a guitar and record. However, he needs to be able to apply effects to the music as he's playing it, distortion in particular, instead of applying it later after it's recorded. He tried Fruity Loops and the effects on there are crap.
Is there any program like Audacity that'll let you apply live distortion effects?

wtf is the point of live distortion effects? All that does is degrade the initial audio quality...

Haven't tried this myself but I think that running something like a Virtual Amp and then simultaneously record its output should work:
