Wolf4SDL\DC public -BETA-

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Wolf4SDL\DC public -BETA-

Post by emptythought »

I figure with the release of openTyrian I'd go ahead to release what I have thus far.

This is the first release of a the newest Wolfenstein 3D port, Wolf4SDL\DC.

VMU code is based on c99koder's DreamZZT and OneThirty8's sdlWolf.

It currently features:
- Sound
- Controller
- Keyboard
- Saves

Controls are:
Dpad - movement
A - shoot
B - strafe
X - open
Y - run

Bugs:
Figure 'em out ;)

I am really excited but I am having trouble getting it to work. It seems I got the .wl6 alt version of Wolf-3d, but not the original...

There's nothing but a 1st_read.bin, a blank Read-Me, and an empty folder in the archive. Where's the actual game?

Make sure you put *.WL6 in /wolf3d before burning it.

Also thanks to Antioch for the LCD graphics.

As |darc| indicated, 1st_read.bin is the program itself. The actual game data is copyrighted, so you will have to buy the game from Id software. It's pretty cheap. There's also the shareware version if fackue's version is compiled to support it (I haven't had time to try it out). I got those files from http://www.bebits.com/app/2718 a while back.

No, not yet. I'll get the other binaries out once I do a proper release.

Yeah, I tried burning with .wl1 and .wl6 alt but it doesn't work. You will need the .wl6 files from the original Wolfenstein 3d release.

You tried hex-editing the executable and changing the extensions by any chance?

If anyone owns a retail CD-ROM with Wolfenstein 3D and\or Spear of Destiny I'm interested in their file layout or the folder path to the data files would also work.

I have disc swapping implemented and I'd like to support as many retail CDs as possible.

Currently supported:
  • Activision CD-ROM with Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny + the two missions
  • Spear of Destiny Super CD
  • RTCW Game of the Year

Just thought I'd like you know the developer of Wolf4SDL added support for older versions of Wolfenstein (which is what yours was). I'd actually recommend upgrading anyway because there's bugs in the older versions.

That's really cool. I love it when programs have support for playing the original CDs. There's just something inherently awesome about putting in DOS and Windows discs and having them play in the Dreamcast.

I have to agree :)

- I didn't realize you've updated the Dreamcast port. That's great! I'm gonna give it a try asap. :D

Do you think it'd be possible to get the engine to play the Jaguar or Mac versions some day ? (kinda like an interpreter)

EDIT: Hm, I think I remember that the Jaguar version actually is more or less based on the DOOM engine...

Thanks guys. I actually own the Activision CD which is what gave me the idea.

No. It would be possible to make a mod that looks like the Mac version by using the sprites and textures it uses because Wolf4SDL supports 128x128 sprites.
I didn't realize you've updated the Dreamcast port.
I haven't released it yet...

I think I have command line arguments working, so you can add a params.txt to the CD and use "--goobers" to enable debug keys.

Just to let you guys know - I haven't abandoned this at all.

A new version should be out soon with pretty much everything implemented. Unfortunately the saving code is no longer working and will be a pain finding out why because I haven't touched that part of the code since release.

If you notice I haven't been posting on any forums, it's probably because I had to move and am without an internet connection, so don't start believing that I bailed before a release.

Glad you are back. It's sad that you won't continue this but I hope the new release will be good enough.

I think he is getting confused with the SMS emulator port fackue did that he said he wasn't going to continue.
