What if Sega made Sonic 2 in HD?
Don't get your hopes up, as Sega more than likely has no plans of ever making a HD Sonic 2 remake. But if they did, here's someone's rendering of what it might look like:

That site doesn't allow hot-linking to their images, but I still managed to see it. Looks cool!!! If they ever make that I'll eat my shorts.

I loved that game... and HATED the last boss. Way too hard, without rings...

IF they was going to remake any of the original 3 Sonic games that would be the last one I would remake personally. Sonic 1 was the best, and 3 was pretty good.

I would say the opposite. Sonic 2 was the best, 3 was pretty good, 1 was the worst (but not bad).Veggita2099 wrote:IF they was going to remake any of the original 3 Sonic games that would be the last one I would remake personally. Sonic 1 was the best, and 3 was pretty good.
It's thinking...

I agree with Pixel. Sonic & Knuckles + Sonic 3 has to be the best of all.

Though I would have to say that Sonic and Knuckles lock-on with Sonic 3 was the best game overall, the game that would make the best remake would be Sonic 2. There are so many elements that could become visually striking in Sonic 2, whereas Sonic 1 would require too many visual changes to make it near as amazing as 2, and anything with Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles would be a mess to create due to the whole lock-on issue.

Agreed. With high resolution sprites and backgrounds, Sonic 2 would be amazing. Especially if they were to remake the special stages using modern 3D techniques. I'd buy it without a second thought.melancholy wrote:Though I would have to say that Sonic and Knuckles lock-on with Sonic 3 was the best game overall, the game that would make the best remake would be Sonic 2. The Saturn version of Sonic 3D features special stages that are almost exactly that.butters wrote:Especially if they were to remake the special stages using modern 3D techniques.

There have been a few different projects that successfully replaced the soundtrack in select Mega Drive/Genesis games (including Sonic 2) with a proper MP3 soundtrack. I wonder, would it be at all possible to substitute more detailed sprites and backgrounds on-the-fly, along the same lines as the alternative high-resolution textures available in some N64 emulators?

Thank God. Most Genesis music sounds like metallic vomit.az_bont wrote:butters wrote:There have been a few different projects that successfully replaced the soundtrack in select Mega Drive/Genesis games (including Sonic 2) with a proper MP3 soundtrack.

Re: What if Sega made Sonic 2 in HD?
Isn't this possible with just sprite replacement?... or maybe not because of resolution limitations. I would think an emulator would have the power to pull something like this off.
But then again I don't know a damn thing about replacing sprites or anything.

Re: What if Sega made Sonic 2 in HD?
This "screenshop" reminds me of the Doom retexturing projects out there. It's very detailed and we can see a lot of work was put into it, but it looks too flat. Something else is also wrong with this kind of art, but I don't know exactly what it is.

Re: What if Sega made Sonic 2 in HD?
The Doom (and Quake) retexturing problem is that you have very high-res textures, but absolutely no geometric detail - detailed textures in a room that's basically a box, for example.
Similar issue here - Sonic 2's backgrounds were pretty repetitive, and there isn't really that much complexity there. Certainly nothing that'd match the small-scale detail added.
Then again, the Death Egg is not the best looking level in Sonic 2 anyway.

Re: What if Sega made Sonic 2 in HD?
In practice this wouldn't work well, there's not enough contrast between the background and the characters, it'd be far too busy and difficult to follow.

Re: What if Sega made Sonic 2 in HD?
There would have to be some stylization to the updated graphics. If the whole game looked like that screen, it'd be like playing a flash version of the original. Maybe some hand-drawn art would make seem more spectacular. Maybe some motion blur?
