How about a 2D platformer?
I was wondering... you know in what genre is the Dreamcast is really lacking? 2D platformers. And it's not just that: back in the 16-bit days, 25% of all games were platformers, now they're around 2%.
I'm certainly not the only one who would love to play a new 2D platformer on the Dreamcast. How about a fantasy epic like Skyblazer, a run-and-gun like Contra, or something cute like Dynamite Headdy...?
What do you guys n' gals think?

OpenBoR should be a capable engine. I think everything you need to create a Contra clone is there.

I was hoping that the port of Super Tux might turn out to be for platformers what BOR has been for beat'em ups. It had a really easy to customize setup where the levels were actually laid out in text files and all the graphics were just GIFs, but unfortunately it was a pretty buggy port and never got much attention or the updates it needed. Too bad.

Here's an idea: digitized photograph sprites, a la Mortal Kombat. It's so crazy, it could work.Saiyan Eye wrote:Where would you find spriters and background artists?

I had a really cool idea for a 2D puzzler/platformer, with everything mapped out and some preliminary hand art done, but I was never able to find a coder to put the game engine together. I kicked it around the Screamcast forums about two years back, but everyone was too busy with their own stuff.
If someone who actually knows their way around programming could help, I think I have something which could be really cool.

The easiest way to make any game is to get some people, ask exactly what each one can do, and build your concepts and design around that. The game must be designed to fit the team, not the other way around.DaMadFiddler wrote:If someone who actually knows their way around programming could help, I think I have something which could be really cool.

Ooops, I forgot about Shinobi Legions, it used digitized photo sprites. And it's a pretty good game. How about something with that visual, in a X-Kaliber 2097-like distopian sci-fi world, and a gameplay that mixes Skyblazer and Strider?

Think something of a mix between Mario, Lode Runner, and Ikaruga. It's a stylized run-and-jump platformer (all the art is constructed from flat colors and simple geometric shapes), with all objects and enemies being one of four colors, or black. You can toggle your player color, and only things that are the same color as you (or black) are solid. I had some fairly intricate levels mapped out on paper, which would make good use of this mechanic.Stormwatch wrote:What's a puzzler/platformer? Something like Flashback?
Impetus just always referred to it as "Fiddler's Ikaruga platformer thing."
A few (very rough) concept sketches here, from a couple years ago.

that is one of the coolest idea's i Have ever heard.... If no one makes a full side scriller like that someone should at least make a BOR mod with all real life sprites.. oh man.. wow.. that is just the best thing i've heard todayStormwatch wrote:Here's an idea: digitized photograph sprites, a la Mortal Kombat. Sounds like you people liked the idea. Let's do some brainstorming. Toss your ideas!
Gameplay... like a mix of Shinobi 3 and Strider. Definitely.
Weapons... sword, shuriken... grappling hook maybe? Magic special attacks?
Plot... no good idea yet. Ninja? Cyborgs? Mutants? Aliens? Occult?
Hero: male or female? Both, for the player to choose? Both for multiplayer? Age?
Clothes: cheesy 80s pop fashion, jeans jacket and spiky hair, that kind of thing. Or something really colorful, like Michael Jackson's jacket in "Thriller".
