Simply put, 3rd Strike. Best Street Fighter to date.

Also Castlevania SOTN.

What comes to mind at the moment:

Castlevania: SOTN & Portrait of Ruin (haven't played Dawn of Sorrow)
Silhouette Mirage
Guardian Heroes
Gradius V

If "2D gameplay with 3D graphics" counts, then:

Ikaruga
New Super Mario Bros.

Give Strider 2 a shot if you haven't; I think you'll dig it. One of the best PS1 games.

Ya know...I have no idea why I haven't played Strider 2 before. I played the shit out of the first game on Genesis. I'll definately check this out.

Dang, it's pretty expensive on eBay. I got mine at a local shop for ~$15 after looking quite a bit. It's both games (1 & 2), if that softens the blow.

I still think Snk made the best 2d fighters for its time; much better than most of what capcom did.

fire pro wrestling (its not just wrestling, mma, martial arts, boxing, amature wrestling, lucha, american pro, japanese stle, and brawlers)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu4kVZpF35w this series made a complete joke of the wwf snes/sega genesis games (punch kick slam pin lmfao, fire pro is 1000x deeper) play fire pro d on dreamcast, or returns on ps2(if u have a moded ps2) I have fire pro d for dreamcast and fire pro 6 man scramble for sega saturn. its far better than the current wwe games and even better than the n64 wwf no mercy and wrestlemania 2000 but its in 2d

if you want a fighting game that requires timing and strategy and not button mashing, then fire pro D or Returns is your game.

but for arcade fast paced fighters yes i liked king of fighters series and fatel fury, and showdown.

but loves capcom as well

i like guilty gear x as well and thats from neither capcom or snk.
