I want a couch and a bed, but my rooms only big enough for one of them so i was considering a futon, but i wanna make sure its a good replacement for a mattress.
I've slept on a really cheap one for a year, and I don't notice the difference. 99% of the time I don't ever fold it down, though I can sleep on a hardwood floor and still be comfortable.
I have a very small apartment, so I have a queensize futon couch/bed apparatus that serves both as my primary seating and as my guest bed, for when family or friends come to visit from out of town. I've slept on it myself a few times as well. It's comfortable enough, but there's a notable difference between it and my normal bed with a real mattress. The futon is firmer, but not in a "more supportive" way; it's just stiffer and denser, if that makes sense. I prefer a firm bed, so I don't use box springs or a soft mattress; my mattress sits directly on the frame of my bed, without any kind of special padding.
A futon is good if you have need of a couch in your space. It's comfortable enough, and it makes a much better seating area than a bed does. However, if you don't need the couch, a real mattress will give you a better night's sleep.
It honestly depends on the matress. If you buy the $80 from Wal-Mart, you are going to feel bars in your back. But if you spend the money to get a really nice matress, then there really is no difference between it and a normal bed. I have a futon that we bought from Wal-Mart many years ago, and the matress was a foam pad. It was horrible. When I went to college, my dad took me to the Futon Factory and we bought a really good matress and just kept the frame off the old one. It works wonderfully and I slept on it for 4 years.

I'm one that hates futons with a pashion, so what I did when I was lacking space was put a couch in and invested in a nice air matress. Goes up quick sleeps comfortably great for sex and hides in the bottom of a closet.
All the futons I've slept on before suck. Just a foam pad and you can feel the bars and springs scraping against you and generally just really uncomfrtable. If you got a proper matress for it though then I guess it would be ok.

basically (and I agree) get a nice one .
The one I have is SUPER tough. Its like a massive thick pillow. Can't feel a thing! (bar/spring wise)

I met a cyclops once - I wasn't sure if he winked or blinked at me.
Go to Ikea. Their shit is cheap, and it's actually really damn comfortable. Some of their pieces may be ugly (some are actually decent looking, though), but they sure as hell do their job pretty well. And, as I said before, you can't beat the price.

Ikea is great for students. Cheap furniture that is high quality and doesn't look out of place in a students room.
