PS2 beating the Dreamcast to be THE console for 2D Fighters?

I'm a pretty big fan of 2D fighters and I usually stick to older consoles for most of my gaming. (I did just get a Gamecube recently though).

However, I've been noticing that the PS2 is getting some 2D loving from SNK lately.

I posted this on my classic gaming blog the other day.

What do you guys think?
Is the PS2 the recommended system for 2D goodness now? Is this possible???

(BTW, I realize the Neo-Geo system is up there as well, but it's out of the reach of most gamers and the game variety isn't up there).

Unfortunately, while DC isn't likely going to get new fighters PS2 is getting the new ones (KOF2003, SvC, Guilty Gear XX, Guilty Gear Isuka), and I must admit PS2 handles 2D pretty well.

yes this was an active decision as sales reported that the ps2 versionof king of fighters 2002 sold more on ps2 than dc

what can we do Playmore left us...

although dc-scene is still there I just hope they are through maintanence soon

Are you talking just Japan or overall. Since the last few KOFs for the DC were only released in Japan.

Actually, the XBOX is becoming the home for 2D fighters. It's getting all the online treatment that PS2 owners arent getting.

It's got decent XBox Live representation, but the number of overall games doesn't come close to Dreamcast, PS2, or even the Saturn

Yes, that's true and even I haven't seen numbers, I'm pretty sure that PS2 conversions sell a lot more than XBox ones.

If I was honest apart from Halo and Halo 2 i cant see any other reason to buy an XBOX, Just One mans opinion, And they rnt even Beat em ups!

Yeah but I'm worried about how lag will affect games. It was pretty awful at times with Capcom Vs SNK 2 EO.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 on PSone was quite good compared to the Saturn version (SFZ3) which used the 4MB RAM cart.

Dude, I dont think you can count ANY of the MK series they arnt in the same class!

What about Darkstakers? I havent played any of em!

Most of that games are really bad, SF EX 1 & 2 are the worst SFs IMHO (and although playability of these games is 2D, they are 3D), SFA2 has HUGE loading times that ruin the game, MK games can be somehow fun to play several hours but then you realize they're horrible. Most fighters in PS1 have really big frame cuts, specially ALL KOF games, it's horrible to play them if you are used to the Arcade/MVS/DC versions.

And hey, you haven't listed the best PS1 2D fighter IMHO in that list: Guilty Gear.
