Aston Shell

Post by Roofus »

I know a few people here use it. I share my computer and I don't think anyone else would appreciate a new shell. Can the other users still use Explorer?

Yes, there are two ways

1) To switch to aston Im pretty sure you need a shell swapper program (forget the name, but downloadable) and you can use that to switch

2) Do all the user have seperate user accounts? If so, simply set the shell swapping program to autorun when you log in, and change it to aston, while leave everybody else untouched, so when they log in...explorer

Edit: Never Mind I've just changed from Explorer to this... t'is pretty damn nifty! Oh and other users can use Explorer, I've made it so that only I log on to use this shell, others use Explorer (unless they wanna cross over once they see it :P)

I'd still be using it if I could get my comic active desktop to work in it :(

I like it a lot. The icon menus down the sides are my favourite part, because I wanted desktop icons, but i wanted them to appear above programs and not get in the way at the same time.
Also, do something like right click on the desktop, it's much much faster than doing the same in explorer.

It can (apparently) run under Cygwin, using Cygwin's X11 server.

Personally, I don't like desktop icons - they do nothing. Panels are much more useful, especially if you can just stick them on a side of the screen, and have them pop up when needed.

I really like virtual desktops (don't know if Aston supports that), and have a bit of a hard time without them since I often have twenty windows open across four desktops.

The main thing I liked about Aston, when I used it, was that it was so much faster and more stable than Explorer, and it was so much more flexible. That's what I like about Unix GUIs too. I just can't stand the normal Windows GUI any more.
