First off, source code release isn't a God-given right or anything. In fact, I think the only thing 3D Realms has ever released the source to is ROTT, and that was mainly in memory of a departed programmer.
Second, it's possible that the source really is lost but they don't want to keep admitting it. The email response might be a lie.
Third, there is the source of the Build engine. Join one of the efforts (I'm sure there are some) to try and reverse-engineer the modifications to it to allow it to play Duke levels. Of course you might want to start off with an "easier" Build game, like Shadow Warrior or Blood (assuming those are easy).

You'd have to be pretty stupid to lose the source to one of the biggest selling games of the past century.Schnapple.com wrote:Second, it's possible that the source really is lost but they don't want to keep admitting it. The email response might be a lie.
In no way would they be easier, in fact, i'd say Duke3D would be the easiest of the bunch, since it came out first, and then SW and Blood came out later with better features...I thinkOf course you might want to start off with an "easier" Build game, like Shadow Warrior or Blood (assuming those are easy).
