You think any n00bs are going to have Japanese DCs? Again I stress this is for SOME EARLY, JAPANESE model DCs.
I am not responsible for any damage you cause to your DC. Even if this mod is successful, the DVD capabilities of the GD ROM drive were not fully tested and you could break your DC anyway.
darc, i believe you, as i did hear and read dreamcast was going to have dvd capabilities, i just thought you might be kidding about the switch, and who knows maybe some n00b who lived in japan and had dreamcast and moved to the US and brough his DC to america with him or some other country. its just a thought. oh well. to bad i dont have a jap dc or i would have tried it. well back away i go. later.
I modded my Dreamcast to play cassette tapes. One of the original concepts of it was to use cassette tapes because they were cheaper than CDs at the time. But they decided it required too many moving parts so they skipped the idea. But they still play, you just need to cut the tape loose from the wheels and wrap it around the laser, and put the little CD-spindle up through the center of the cassette wheel. You may have to modify the spindle..
That's a good joke, but it could be construed as malicious, since someone is bound to try it, and mess up their DC...
Just like those who advise cleaning CDs with nail polish remover, or making self-boot CD-Rs by cutting grooves into the disc's surface.
To the best of my knowledge, DVD playback requires a completely different laser assembly to that of a CD-ROM drive. That's why some PS2s quit playing DVDs when they break down, but they still can play CDs.
That's why the DC had that nifty "plug-in" GD-ROM drive, to allow for future updates, like the once-planned DVD drive.
