New Dreamcast Game
Whats up guys!
For those who are not familiar, myself(PH3NOM)(programmer) and Wilson(juguefre)(artist) have been working on a new game for the Dreamcast.
Initially, the engine was using the Quake III BSP for the level format.
However, due to inherent limitations in the Quake .map format, I have pushed the engine forward and created a new MAP format for the Dreamcast using QuadTree partitioning for the collision, with fast render meshes optimized for the Dreamcast hardware.
Everything you see here are assets created by juguefre and is our own copyright
This is no small feat; this model is some ~3.5k tris:
We are still hard at work to create a final product, so please stay tuned!

Re: New Dreamcast Game
Hey man thanks for taking a look!
First off, my engine is not a port of Quake 3.
It is a brand new engine written by myself using C, intended for the Dreamcast hardware.
Some critical pieces of code are using assembly, like the model render and model shadow render routines, and when I am done, the ray->triangle collision code.
In the beginning, I used the Quake 3 BSP format for world geometry and collision detection, but it has been a nightmare for my 3D artist Wilson to work in this format.
Now we are no longer using the Quake 3 BSP format; I have created a custom format that gives us complete control over how we do things.
I cant say much about EDGE due to a nda I have with Dan and the Goat store http://www.goatstorepublishing.com/
But one thing we know publicly is that it is very much a port of open-source multi-platform code using C++, SDL, and OpenGL.

Re: New Dreamcast Game
This is looking very promising. A much needed new direction for DC homebrew.
It's thinking...

Re: New Dreamcast Game
Looking great guys, you've managed to get a lot of detail into those meshes on the hardware, so am looking forward to seeing where this goes. Will the game be a single player campaign campaign or more like Quake 3?

This looks amazing! I assume Payday: The Heist is an inspiration here? Any plans for online multiplayer?

Glad you asked. There will be a Single Player Campaign that is event-driven.
I do not want to give too many details yet, but the Single Player mode is nothing like Quake 3.
In fact, even the multi-player mode is nothing like Quake 3
We are more focused on a more realistic experience, physically and visually, than Quake 3's sci-fi theme.

Payday is not a inspiration, but a derivative of the source inspiration
Dark Knight bank scene, anyone?

Re: New Dreamcast Game
Same here:
Sounds really great PH3NOM. Your 3D engine is already impressive, and to see a nice, brand new FPS (I love these games) with a Single campaign made with it, sounds so great to me.
Keep up the great work!

Re: New Dreamcast Game
Thank you all for taking a look.
We are still early in our developmental cycle, but things are shaping up quite nice
-We are rendering very high quality models; higher polygon than probably most commercial DC games
-We are implementing a Melee Combat System along with Projectile Weapons in our Model / Animation / Combat System.

Its looking great.I hope you implement a third person view as an option.(never was a much of fps lover.) Kinda like what quake 3dc had.

Not only an option, it is switchable real-time

Re: New Dreamcast Game
We have been quiet, but working hard.
Sorting out the new level format, things are looking quite good
My engine supports instancing, to reduce memory usage, and is used by most assets seen here:
Also, models are using a LOD system to reduce vertex count
And the engine supports 1st or 3rd person perspective :0

Looking amazing! Will there be keyboard and mouse support for this BTW? It's a must have for FPS games on the Dreamcast!
