It always seemed to me that there was Soul Calibur, and then there was "SoulCalibur-any-other-version." There's the original/Dreamcast game, which I enjoyed very much and felt was relatively well balanced. Then there's 2-4 and all the spinoff versions, which all look and feel the same as each other but have very different timing from the original (in SC1, there was significant recovery time from each of your moves, which felt more realistic and became part of your fighting strategy, and in all the sequels, moves are instantaneous and you can always pull off another move immediately after). Sure, they tweaked the roster with each iteration, and added a level editor after 2, but for the most part every SC after the first felt like just a repackaged version of the same thing.
