Stupid Things You Like Anyway
I was talking with a friend last weekend about the difference between like/dislike and thinking something is "good" or "bad." For example: No Country for Old Men is an excellent movie. Watching it, I can recognize that it is well done. But for whatever reason, I just don't care for it. I think it's related to the message; everything feels too aimless for me. It's not a good escape, as it were.
On the other hand, there are many things I've really liked, even as an adult, that I know are not very good.
What "bad" things do you like? Here are some of mine:
- Scooby-Doo cartoons
- Dark Saviour for Sega Saturn
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer (both the show and the comics)
- Batman with Adam West
- the Evil Dead movies
- A Comedy of Terrors (horrible, horrible film starring Vincent Price, Basil Rathbone, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff)
- ...well, make that just about any bad Vincent Price film. Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine is also a favorite.
- The Offspring
- Sonic Heroes (yeah, yeah, I know...but it was the game that felt closest to what a 3D Sonic should be)
- Mystery Science Theater 3000 (well, the actual movie bits. The live-action & puppet segments in between are just groan-worthy)

They aren't bad, or I'm in denial. They're one of my favorite bands ever, and I like almost every track on every CD- The Offspring
It's thinking...

A better title would have been "Guilty pleasures"...
Science fiction novels

Science fiction novels can be good, though. Now, if it's something that's specifically pulpy or badly written that you like anyway (such as Doc Savage, James Bond, The DaVinci Code, Left Behind, Twilight...) then it counts, but there are plenty of sci-fi novels that are legitimately good works of literature.
Incidentally, I had to read a Left Behind book my final year of college, for a Contemporary Religion & Literature class. I really don't understand why those things sold so well; it's quite possibly the worst book I've ever read in my life. It was basically Bible fan fiction.

Re: Stupid Things You Like Anyway
Godzilla movies
Deana Carter and Mindy Mcready
Jean Claude Van Damme movies
MadTV (the old episodes with Will Sasso and Nicole Sullivan)
George Michael (the singer, not the sportscaster)
Michael Jackson
Prince
Dinosaurs (the Jim Henson TV show from the early 90s)
I'm sure there's quite a bit more, but that's all I can think of at the moment. Feel free to make fun of any of it.

Yea, I'm a big sucker for Blood Sport. Terrible acting, but he's a beast in that movie.curt_grymala wrote: Jean Claude Van Damme movies

Elton John
HIM
Limp Bizkit's first album
Creed
No Doubt
Blink-182
I wouldn't put The Offspring down as a guilty pleasure, they're one of the best pop punk bands around (and there's not many around anymore, most pop punk bands have converted to emo). Their last album stayed true to their roots instead of converting to emo crap like every other pop punk band that's still making music did, which I thought was very cool.
