Living in the boondocks 20 to 30 minutes drive from any community I could be servicing when both of my parents work (one as a commercial fisherman who can be out for up to two weeks) makes it rather difficult.

In an ideal world? What about this one ? - It was totally free for EVERYONE here up until 2007. If your parents weren't too rich, you even received money (BAFÖG, a credit you did not need to fully pay back) so you did not need to work if you didn't want to during your time at college. - Now you have to pay €500 each semester as they're currently steering towards a privatization of the public universities; like they did with the hospitals back in 2000.

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Say, did those teachers work for free? I really doubt it, so it was never free.

On the other hand, let's suppose: what if they did? There are still costs: food, clothes, books, paper, pencils, whatever it takes to do the job - and teaching is certainly not an easy job. If those teachers chose to work for "free", it just means they finance their own costs. If there is a cost, someone always has to pay.

Well, free for those that do want to learn... but don't you worry about our professors and teachers. They're paid pretty good it seems. - The German universities are all tax funded. They all have about a budget that's about a tenth of that of Yale, Harvard and Stanford - much more than most average American universities, and that's been before they got €500 from each Student. On average, one professor teaches 50 students, that's not that much I think.

Yeah, one would guess that the funding for health care would have to come from state or federal taxes to pay for it... There is no such thing as free health care. Someone in your country is paying the taxes, or borrowing to afford it, regardless of whether or not your tax bracket has a part in it.

Tell the Republicans to quit f**king up the economy, telling citizens that not everyone has equal rights, and borrowing billions (a thousand - millions for us US citizens) from China. Also outsourcing our jobs, telling gay people that they don't have the same rights as us straight people, and putting their special interest "donors" before the environment and our animal friends, to name a few.

Anyway, the biggest difference between now and then is that today it's driven by democracy. You elect those that you think would do the best job. Sounds good in theory, but doesn't work if you can only choose how fast they sell out the things that they were supposed to improve.

WASHINGTON -- A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist or fascist dictatorship.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may -- may not, I hope not -- but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."

Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.

"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."

Obama's comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado about building a new civil service corps. Among other things, he called for expanding the nation's foreign service and doubling the size of the Peace Corps "to renew our diplomacy."

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama said in July. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Broun said he also believes Obama likely will move to ban gun ownership if he does build a national police force.

Obama has said he respects the Second Amendment right to bear arms and favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault weapons and concealed weapons. As an Illinois state lawmaker, Obama supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on firearms generally.

"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun said. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential."

Obama's transition office did not respond immediately to Broun's remarks.

After looking up this Broun guy it gets even funnier. Not only did he just barely manage to get into office. He banned porn for the military.

Broun introduced a military anti-pornography bill into the House of Representatives. The bill is meant to stem the sales of pornography on U.S military installations. This bill basically notes that the there should be no loopholes in a former piece of legislation (Title 10 of the United States code), effectively banning military personnel from viewing pornography (Now entitled the "Military Honor and Decency Act").[6] According to Broun's website, legislation will only be passed based on his "Four Way Test", which includes, "1) Is it moral/right?, 2) Is it constitutional?, 3) Is it necessary?, and 4) Is it affordable?"

Yeah and this asshole is comparing Obama to Hitler? hahaha Fucking tool. And a quick check of where he was elected.. the 10th District of Georgia. Most of these counties are empty or hard core racist strong holds. Yeah call him a marxist!!!! One day people will have the balls to say I don't like black people in my government.

With all the problems the current Republican administration has had for it's last two terms, I fail to see why anyone here actually thinks that McCain was the better choice of the two.

Considering he backed Bush and his Pro-War fellow republicans. He supported tax breaks for companies shipping jobs overseas, Big Oil (A big No No in these Green Days), and many other traditional Republican strongholds.

Maybe some of you United Kingdom people can understand how badly the Republican party here in the states has screwed us over, domestically and in foreign affairs... Considering his biggest backer was the very beloved Blair. Do you think invading a entire country without justifiable cause or support from it's people was the correct thing to do?

Especially while it erases the surplus created by the previous administration, brings the entire economy to a collapse, and results in a spike of violence for the Iraqi people. Who by the way had no Al-Qaeda presence before the invasion. How about no weapons of mass destruction (Daddy's vendetta)? Not to say that Saddam wasn't an evil person, just that he had better control of the region than we do...

Uh, yeah... In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote. Unfortunately for our nation, the Supreme Court saw fit to award Florida's electoral votes to George W. Bush after people working on his behalf made such a valiant effort to disenfranchise thousands of Florida voters.
