Dreamcast Seemless NES pad controller

Post by FamilyGuy »

I just wanted to show my most recent Dreamcast Modification, a Seemless NES pad controller Dreamcast controller ...
To be accurate, it's a modded dreamcast controller wich seems retail but with a 2de vmu port non-working. But when you put a modded NES controller in this 2de vmu port, it acts like a a real NES controller to play with emulators. I did it this way to give it a retail look, to look like something you could buy at the local radio shack. (note: my nes cable is white but it's only because I didn't find any black ones.)

I've done this with a Dreamcast controller, a 9-pin serial cable, a dead nes controller and a tremor pack(rumblepack).

It's really cool to play Elevator action or Super Mario Bros 3 with a NES pad... Like when I was young ...

I think it's a first time done hack (using a vmu port I mean).

Nice job! Question: Does the DC pad still work?

with these mods the DC pads usualy still work, yes.

i've found that they do require some clever wire routing and minimal solder, or the buton presses take a little more effort to register

I know you didnt ask me, but when I did this mod the dc pad was almost useless. Not because anything is wrong with it, but because the wires that are soldered on get in the way of the d pad working really well. If you want the dc controller to work perfectly, you have to tap into the trace at such a point that it doesnt impede the use of any of the butons.

Every buttons works fine and are as easy to press as any others. I just tested :P
This controller without a nes plugged in is really looking and feeling like a retail one, but with corrupted 2de vmu port.

In fact, if you look at where I palced my wires, you'd see that the wires are as away from buttons and buttons plastic cap with connectors as possible.

Thank you again from the great comments !

I also think I'd be able the do a Nes-pad to DC controller ( this mod but without a dreamcast controller host) using an astropad+nes controler, but I have only one astropad controller and it's reserved for my DCp :P

What's really nice about this is that now you can adapt other controllers without modifying more DC controllers. A single DC controller to plug them all :).

thats fucking brilliant !! props to you, sir!!!

question: do the buttons on dreamast controller work if pressed simulateneoues/shortyl after the nes controller's buttons while the nes controller is connected?

consider making a switch so u can still use it as a VMU slot? :D

Thank you !

The both controllers works as original ones, and there's no "latency".

A switch would be possible, but it'd require a 14pin switch ... or for the nes controlelr only, a 9 pin one ...

now that is pretty sweet! I was doing the old NES controller to DC mod awhile back. Finished the NES control part, but got really fustrated when trying to re do the connections inside the DC controller. I need to pick it up again and mess with it whenever I get the time.

Wow...very sleek.

Reminds me conceptually of the VMU battery pak I came up with a couple of years ago. If there were more activity in the Dreamcast scene, I would consider making some...but I doubt there'd really be any interest at this point.

...As an alternate suggestion, you could build one that has an NES controller port on the top of the insert, so the NES pad doesn't have to be modified.

I'd have to get a microcontroller to convert the nes signal into an output then map it to the dreamcast buttons, I think it's too much complicated (and $) for nothing. The idea is good though :D

ps: If someone wanna buy this (both controller working togheter) or order something similar to me, I'm opened to buisiness as long as your price are reasonnable (a.k.a. not 4.99$)

Long live to DC !

Also here's a pic of my new DC-related project, almost done, working on the case. (and seeking for time...)
