Are any of them not subject to ridiculous software lockouts imposed by the carriers and/or manufacturers?

No matter what software or hardware any competitors introduce, Apple will maintain the lead simply because of the amount of apps and the community surrounding them.

Re: Phone of the decade?
I don't think I could ever look back after going Android. Having the contacts, email and calendar sync is pretty awesome. I don't even keep music on my G1 because I got Pandora, Last.Fm and Shoutcast. Also I live by googlemaps.
So that narrows it down to 2 of the 4. It's a tough choice between the droid and the mytouch. I like the real keyboard and Android 2.0 on the Droid. Also Verizon has a much larger coverage area, but Tmo is much more affordable and the mytouch can be rooted to do cool stuff.

Re: Phone of the decade?
How much of your monthly limit do you end up blowing towards Pandora? That's my number 1 reason for upgrading to a real phone. GPS was a close second until I got a Garmin...JuddWack wrote:I don't think I could ever look back after going Android. Having the contacts, email and calendar sync is pretty awesome. Re: Phone of the decade?
I don't know how much I'm using exactly but on Tmo, for the G1 at least, you have to get a plan with unlimited data. After taxes and all I get 1000 whenever, unlimited nights/weekends, 400 text, unlimited data for $72. 3G in all the major cities, which is about to get much faster, but edge when you get out into suburbs and semi rural areas. I'm surprised though, Edge can still download maps, stream music, and load simple websites fast enough for when I'm not near a wifi connection. I just drove 3,300 miles with just my G1 for navigation on Tmo and for the most part had no problems except certain parts of Texas.

Yea, I have a G1 as well and I think the biggest strength of tmobile v verizon is that the latter has a cap of 5gb a month while I've not ever found note of a data cap on my tmobile plan. Oh, and I don't know about the others, but it's really easy to tether a G1.

Phone of the decade?
Which is the best?
Those are three different questions. What is my new phone going to be?
The iPhone is clearly the phone of the decade; it made lots of money, made headlines, made smartphones cool.
But is it the best? That's a different matter. The interface is great, but Android-based systems seem to have more features and sheer freedom... I still have to try them before I can say much, though.
What you'll buy? Whatever you want, man.

Re: Phone of the decade?
I'm extremely happy with my 3GS, but I would love to try out the Moto Droid. AT&T has the best coverage in this city, so that kindof factored into it.
I think Apple really needs to reinvent/update their interface in a major way with Android 2.0 coming out. Also, I really want Google Navigator...

A problem with Droid: seems you get locked to Verizon.

Can't speak for the others but I'm still wildly in love with my little iPhone, I'd be lost without it now

I love the iPhone, but only because of the apps. If the Android's apps could compare to the sheer variety of things available on the iPhone, I'd definitely switch.

Re: Phone of the decade?
interesting to see a post regarding phones, as i've wanted to shoot myself over them recently. This is only slightly related to this topic, but I had to say it as it does involve the new android phone I want.
/beginrant
Sprint is my provider and the other day I wanted to go ahead and look into upgrading my phone. The phone I want to get is the Smasung Moment that runs on Android. Any new smart phone from sprint requires a data plan, which makes sense. Although the prices are quite irritating. Currently I am on (a now retired) "family fair and flex plan" where I pay less than 80 bucks a month for txting, a good amount of mins that we never go over, and all there rest of the basics. When I went to inquire about getting this phone, it literally wont activate on anything but their new "everything" plans. The cheapest route for me to go would be a new plan that includes stuff I dont need such as doubling my mins (when I never go over in the first place) and stuff like Sprint TV, sports crap, and music store access. All I want is unlimited txting, internet, and something close to the amount of mins I am paying for. All of this after tax is going to run me about 150 dollars a month!!!! Literally almost double the cost of my current plan just so I can upgrade to a new phone and get one feature I already dont have (unlimited internet). Such a shitty move by Sprint to restrict these phones to these plans and not allow me to just add a unlimted datapack to my plan as they want everyone off those old affordable plans. I'm gonna ask my sister if she is on one of the new plans and add my line to hers, as im not doubling my montly payments to sprint just for a new freaking phone!

That really sucks. I didn't know that. The moment looks like a good phone too. I think TMo is definitely the most affordable route to a smartphone.Nico0020 wrote:When I went to inquire about getting this phone, it literally wont activate on anything but their new "everything" plans.

Re: Phone of the decade?
Honestly, it's mostly games. I use my phone as a gaming handheld so I don't have to constantly travel with my DS or PSP. I have SimCity, Zenonia, Hero of Sparta, Beneath a Steel Sky, Zen Bound, Rolando, Vay, Asphalt 4, Glyder, Mahjongg, and Tiki Towers. And I have purchased more games in the past but deleted them off as I either completed or got bored with them. Honestly, about the only utility apps I have are Air Mouse, Pandora, and a better Weather App. But I game like crazy on my iPhone.AuroEdge wrote:The post I've been waiting for! Re: Phone of the decade?
I fricking LOVE AirMouse. Shazam is also a fantastic app that I find myself using at least twice a day.
