If I ever want to run only a quarter of my programs I need, I'll come over to Linux.

Until then, I'll be on Steam playing HL2, while you'll be playing TuxRacer.

I once tried Linux. I burned Ubuntu to a disk and tried to boot from it, but it would crash before even loading the boot screen. I burned three different Ubuntu versions, searched the internet for solutions, and finally found out that my video card wasn't compatible with Ubuntu's boot menu.

That was pretty much my whole Linux experience. Two hours of work and couldn't even load my computer past the post screen.

No it isn't. Considering linux is supposedly now a "non-nerd OS" - I will tell you the "non-nerd OS" way of thinking: You double-click on something, and it runs. If something takes more than this to run, it either:
- doesn't run properly
or
- requires "nerd OS skills" to make it run.

No Mr. Casual PC User wants to ever be typing in text commands, downloading how-to documents from community forums, download libraries, running emulators, or anything similar.

Linux is funded by spyware. They don't have to install some hidden executable on your computer, they just wait for you to join a Linux community forum and post everything about yourself there. This is a true scandal.

Linux is fine for casual users. All the basic apps are there, are preinstalled, and work properly, if you have a decent distro. It's when users want to go beyond the casual realm that things begin to cause trouble.

My dad uses his computer to do a few simple tasks for his business. He needs to read his email, be able to visit websites, type and save documents, and attach these documents to emails for his customers. Sometimes he'll want to print these documents. Occasionally he'll visit YouTube to watch some videos. Oh, and when my sister comes over, she likes to get on my dad's laptop and visit her myspace and show my mom photos.

Linux works fine for these things. I would imagine that most people don't go beyond these simple tasks. Just because Linux doesn't fix your application doesn't mean it doesn't fit in for many applications. It's perfect for very casual users, OS-tinkerers, programmers, and servers. Of course, most of these are experienced users, so I'm not saying that 2009 is the year of Linux on the desktop or that Linux is taking over anytime soon. But plenty of vendors are offering Linux distributions preinstalled now, including Dell. To users who start off using computers with Linux, it is no more difficult than learning Windows. Switching is much harder, but switching to Mac OS X is pretty difficult, too, and most people consider that an "easy" OS to use.

Disclaimer: I use Windows XP on my desktop, Mac OS X on my laptop, and Linux on my server. My dad's laptop has been juggled among XP, Vista, and Linux.

I think I'm bias because the one time I used Linux for any length of time I had to use OpenOffice. It corrupted all my documents with Japanese text in them without warning and I had to rewrite everything again. Fucked me right off.

Plus I have no problems with Windows XP whatsoever.

I don't see why you should be biased against Linux because of OpenOffice.org. It's available on Windows, too, and I would imagine most OpenOffice.org users are Windows users. There's more than one mature office suite available for Linux, but OpenOffice.org is the most popular.

Something very shit happened because I wasn't using what I normally use. It's hard to come back from that.

If Linux wants to be seen as a non-nerd OS it should rename itself to FamilyCenter Lite: Sunshine Edition and should replace TuxRacer with a Cooking Mama rip-off and a free FM/AM Radio-alarm clock.
