This is what happens when you let parents teach sex ed

Post by Roofus »

A mother and her boyfriend were sentenced to three years probation on Monday for having intercourse in front of the woman's 9-year-old daughter to teach the girl about sex.

Chief Family Court Judge Jeremiah S. Jeremiah Jr. sentenced Rebecca Arnold of Woonsocket, and her boyfriend, David Prata, to probation and a three-year suspended sentence after they pleaded no contest to a felony child neglect charge.

The judge said he wanted to spare the young girl, now 11, from testifying, according to Michael Healey, a spokesman for Attorney General Patrick Lynch.

During an investigation by the state child welfare authorities, Prata, 33, said he and Arnold, 36, had sex "all the time" in front of the child and that "we don't believe in hiding anything." He told an investigator that they did not force the girl to watch.

The allegations surfaced in December 2004 after the girl went to live with her father in North Adams, Mass., after spending the summer with her mother in Woonsocket.

A teacher called a child abuse hotline to report that the girl said her mother and her boyfriend had sex in front of her. Woonsocket police arrested the couple February 2005.

My school-approved sex ed was worse.

Slideshow of STD-affected genitals.

Made me sick. I left the room.

Who the fuck does that to children?
Where's toastman? I'm bored.

I'm not really sure how this is neglect. I wouldn't have wanted to see my parents having sex "all the time" in front of me, but walking in on them once or twice didn't really bother me much.

I don't see how it would be harmful to the child, at least from what the article states was involved.

The first thing that came to mind when I read that article is the scene from The Meaning of Life.

That would have been fairly traumatic...even at my age, I couldn't imagine.

Whats traumatic for one kid doesn't phase another. I love blanket laws that don't take into account individuality.

I agree that kind of thing would just leave me devastated.
Your parents having sex in front of you is just... unhealthy and disgusting

Although I do agree that many people take sex too seriously, it's a natural thing that has to happen for the survival of the human race.

A lot of people say that (though I've yet to meet someone who had actually experienced that who found it traumatic), and I really don't get it at all.

Finding it gross or whatnot I understand, but beyond that I can't follow.

Maybe you could try explaining it?

Well it would be very weird for me, but my parents got divorced when I was 10.

What I find funny is you can watch movies of people being gutted, raped, killed, tortured, etc at the age of 17, but you can't see people having sex until your 18.

Don't pretend you didn't watch dirty nasty sex videos at age 17. But, at least in the United States, it's not lawful to watch most mature material like killing until you're 18.

Movies that are rated R feature such things. Hostel was R where as most countries gave it their equivalent of 18+ only. Our country is a very violence friendly one where are sex is a no no topic. The MPAA group that rates movies is extremely bias as well, mainly against movies that might be somewhat gay or independent in production.

Nope. There aren't laws regulating what violence minors can watch in the way you're describing in the USA.

As far as porn for minors, from what I can recall it's only illegal to sell it to minors (usually charged as something like contributing to the delinquency of a minor). I don't think it is actually illegal for them to watch them.

There was a show on TV over here last week that looked at Sex Education in Holland. They were having classes with 6-year-olds about the differences between Homo and Hetrosexuality and what it feels like to be in love, holding after-school youth clubs for 11-year-olds about how to put a condom on a dildo, and 13-year-olds were watching extremely explicit sex education videos.

A few teachers tried to implement similar things in the UK and ended up recieving loads of protest letters off parents. One person even wrote that she never wants her child to learn about sex at any age.

Thing is though, Holland has one of the lowest teenage-pregnancy rates in Europe, while the Uk has the highest. It can't just be a coincidence.

what's amusing is that in the UK you can have sex at 16, you can't watch a recording of someone else doing it though, until you are 18.
