DC First Person Shooters

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

DC First Person Shooters

Post by prymetyme2 »

Hey,
Maybe you guys could help me again from wasting CD-Rs. Which of these emulated games are full speed (or at least look and feel it)?
Doom
Hexen
Duke Nukem
Quake
Quake 2
Wolfenstein 3d
Heretic

Also, some of these (Quake, Doom, Duke) I have my store bought copy on CD. Is it difficult to get these to Dreamcast? I'm guessing an sbi is the way to go. Is there much difference between getting the shareware version and using the version from a CD?
Thanks for all the help!

Doom is great as is Quake, Quake 2 will lock after a few levels as it fills the memory though (if you have a keyboard however you can jump to the level after a restart), havent tried the dc versions of the others but you'll be wanting to get the wad/pak files as appropiate for each game from your cd's. The shareware versions are cut down versions of the games, in Dooms case its the first chapter of it, thats the entire first chapter so theres still fun to be had if thats all you can find, but of course with the cd version you get obviously all of it.

Yeah, that's bundled together with the Doom 1 ports.

The Doom ports can play Doom, Doom2, Ultimate Doom, and Final Doom. They also can load mods for Doom.

Do you happen to own Rise Of The Triad? Even if you don't, grab the shareware version of the port, it's absolutely flawless. Only trouble it has is a long load time as you first start it up, after which it runs beautifully. That's my recommendation for DC ported FPSes. ;)
- Interesting.

Yep, it's a first person shooter alright. Here's the official website: http://www.3drealms.com/rott/ There're some screenshots there about half way down the page.

Rise of the Triad is a MUST try,

Heretic seemed full speed to me, but I only played it once. But then, you can burn all these games to one CD together, so why not do that and jst try them all.

Hexen is fullspeed.

Duke Nukem 3D is alpha, it's slow, and if I remember it has no sound. I could explain why, but I'm too lazy to right now.

Wolfenstein 3D is full speed, although the controlls are kinda screwy, and there's no sound.

Herectic is full speed.

Rise of the Triad is definatly something you should try out, fun game.

Actually, all FPS game that are ported to the DC makes the game extra fun :P.
