Heh, N64...2D games...heheh. The N64 wasn't good at 2D at all and what's ironic is that iwasn't really good at 3D, either. It was mostly good at blurry and painfully monotonous graphics. Don't get me wrong, I'm actually one of the few N64 fans in the world, but its graphics weren't its strength.
The Saturn was certainly the best system ever for 2D, it could (or could have) done things in 2D that no current or probably future system ever will be able to do. For a while I thought maybe handhelds would eventually surpass the Saturn in 2D power, but they're going 3D too now, so it looks like the Saturn will forever be king.
And I think it's wrong to think that no 2D game can push the power limits of the Dreamcast. They push its limits in terms of 2D, which is worth paying attention to because 2D games are very beautiful, often much more so than 3D games.
I forgot all about Grandia 2. Man, that game is lovely. I still haven't ever played it for more than a couple days, though. Some day I'll have to devote some real time to it.

Ah, Panzer Dragoon was announced for the DC, but the name ORTA wasn't introduced, and I'm not sure if anything was ever developed for the DC... I remember reading all this stuff in a magazine... it had a big list of all the Dreamcast stuff that was to be released before SEGA stopped distribution and development... sadly only 1/3 of the games were actually released... on either platformsMaximo2703 wrote:hmm baldmonk didn't know they too were meant to be DC games..in that case was Panzer Dragoon Orta another one?....i never played the Tokyo Extreme series

Ah, that's Gundamn Federation vs Zeon isn't it? It's bloody great... I found an import at a 2nd hand store... score.

You did that? Thats amazing! I though that face picture was from Half-Life 2...I did it. The car was designed and modelled for the 3rd Peugeot design contest, but i didnt win Sad
And the rendered face is me
Also, Code Veronica looks amazing! Those pics were really nice! I have only played it once, in a store, but now I have to get it!

Excelllent work matey... I'm also a 3D modeller/animator etc. What proggy you using? I've been using lightwave for ages, and this year I'm being taught Maya... man, I hate Maya.... but the UV mapping feature in Maya is so advanced it's well worth usingSegata Sanshiro wrote:I did it. I model and aminate for games, so all i do is low poly (with fiew exceptions).
I use silo to model, amazing modeller and unbelievably cheap for what it does.
I do my UV mapping with ultimate unwrap, excellent standalone program.
The animations are done with a couple of cheap tools (characterFX - not produced anymore and FragMOTION) due to format limitations of the engine i model for.
Renders in Vue'd Esprit mainly for product presentations (packaging, expo stands, etc.).

...I never was able to discern just exactly how much of Ikaruga was realtime 3D rendered, and how much of it was sprites or video. The bacgrounds, for instance: sometimes I'm sure they can't be anything other than videos, other times I'm fully convinced they're realtime models that just have really good textures. And I'm pretty certain the ships are all models, but I had someone trying to convince me once that they were all sprites.
Anyone know the truth?

Everything is polys except the shots, explosions, beams, etc.
The level structure is highly optimised since we have a fixed point of view, thus what we see is the only thing thats modelled... for example the bottoms of the ships and structures are simply not there (except for those that have to rotate at some point). The levels i think are made with octree culling and not BSP.
