HL sets up the story for HL2 but you really don't miss much. Basically the events of HL allowed the combine to find Earth, about it. Freeman kicked the shit out of the problem in HL, however the vortigaunts love for Freeman would seem a bit odd if you don't know why they'd be grateful.

Yeah, I thought that especially since the part of HL that I played, they wanted to kill me. They just need a HL book or something.

Just a quick heads up for everyone, nvidia released new beta forceware drivers that increase performance with HL2 Ep 2. You can grab them here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_163.75.html

I noticed an improvement of about 10 frames or so on average with HL2, Portal, and TF2.

This. I couldn't stand the original Half Life so I skimmed the story online, jumped into HL2 and had a blast.

Actually, I started the original Half Life last night again. I'm through the first 5 chapters, and it's not as boring as I remember. I think instead of jumping right into Ep2, I'm going to play all four of them in order.

I actually installed steam recently on linux(my video card is finally supported, YAY), and im starting the original half life again, that and playing sven-coop. God I love those games. When I originally played this game, I played it on dreamcast. It was the best looking version of the game, but man those loading times. But it was soooo worth it! BTW anyone post your steam names and maybe we can get some games of something going!

Just got and finished Portal this afternoon. So short but FUCKING AMAZING!!! The gameplay is great and rewarding when you figure out the more complex puzzles, and I love the sense of humor. I wanna play through it again soon.

I've beat the first two advanced maps. Having a bit hard time doing the third. The timed sets are difficult as hell.

Looks like you can play HL2, Ep1, and Ep2 with the portal gun now too!

Okay, after trying it, it's not as fun as I though it would be (not to mention it's definitely straining the system). But there are definitely so great elements, though. Like having a Combine chase you, shooting a portal behind them, then dropping through the floor just as he's about to hit you and nailing him from behind with the crowbar. Or picking off the helicopter by hiding behind rocks and shooting rockets through the portal. You can become quite stealthy with the portal gun.

Question:

Can you modify your server to allow the portal gun in HL2 multiplayer games?

No, because the levels boot in Portal. All this mod does is allow Portal to boot HL2 levels. There's no way to get the Portal gun outside the game of Portal.

Also, I did finally beat the original Half Life last night. I guess I should have listened to you guys, because finishing that game really didn't clear up anything for me. But at least I understand now why the game was such a huge hit back in the day. And the G-Man at the end made me laugh, so it wasn't a bad experience at all. It just didn't answer any of the questions I had.

I think I might finish Half-Life tonight after my midterms are over. I played through it about 1/3 last week, wanting to do the same thing as you, play through all the HL games. I've already beaten HL2, but never had the patience to get through Half-Life.

How did you play it? I was waiting for Black Mesa: Source to come out, but it seems like by the time that game comes out the Source engine will be ancient. I have been playing it on highest settings with Half-Life: Source with a modded Blue-Shift HD pack to work on HL:S. It doesn't look too bad.

Gah, I scoured the internet for a Source compatible HD pack and couldn't find anything! Not that it will do me much good now, but do you have a link to that? I really want to see how improved the models are.

But yeah, I used HL:S since I no longer have my original disc from 1999 (an old roommate stole it from me). It wasn't bad, but despite my love for Half Life games, I still suck terribly at FPS. I had to use god mode for the last four levels because they were simply impossible for me to beat, even on easy. FPS are the one style of game that I don't think I'll ever get a grasp on.

Right now, though, I have started HL2 again, and am currently at Water Hazard.

I couldn't find the pack again (all results showed some half-converted pack), but I did still have the extracted folder before I copied it over to the SteamApps folder, so here it is:

Holy crap, it's amazing how dramatically different the game looks with that pack installed! The Source engine with that pack is the absolute best way to experience the original Half-Life. I wish I could have played through it with that pack installed in the first place, as it would have been a much better experience.
