Dreamcast: Fan mod... How would I do this...

Post by dc_modder »

FYI I'm a COMPLETE newb. I've read all the tuts, but this is my first electrical part.

I recently gutted my DC and painted it. I have taken it apart over 10 times to look and stuff. My old computer fried and I took the DC12V CPU fan from it. It has three wires: red, black, and yellow. I'm smart enough to know that red is positive, so I'd solder/hook it to the 12 pin coming from the mainboard. Then the black is negative, so I'd put that on a ground, right? What do I do with the yellow? THX in advance 8-)

I think yellow is for regulation by system, so I'd just tape it closed with electrical tape.

yep the yellow wire sends pulses, the pc can then display the fan speed and/or adjust its speed.

Okay. Another question. I don't feel like stripping the wires (cuz I suck at that), so I stuck a paper clip through each hole and taped it there. I was gonna stick the paper clip into the pins oin the PSU, but would the paper clip heat up/break something?

was it a fan hooked up to a molex connector(yellow wire, black wire, black wire, red wire)? because if it was red is for 5v and yellow is for 12v and the blacks are ground.
Old school.

So if I do strip them what do I use to put them inbetween the pins and the PSU? Maybe a male crimp connector? (Or is it a female?) Or will a paper clip hold up temp. so I can test?

I wouldn't use paper clips to transfer power to the PS. Just strip the wires a bit, and get some wire of similar gauge to extend it to the PS if your wires aren't long enough. I see no need to add an extra fan to the DC though, it gets adiquite (spelling?) with the stock fan.

using paperclips to extend the wires?!?!? you need to stop before you go any further and get some basic soldering experience before you kill your DC.

A) I don't have an iron.
B) I'm young and have no money.
C) I'm new to modding internals of my DC.

Answer why the hell I'm thinking like I am??? Geez.

you can get a 10-15 watt iron for 5 bucks at radio shack. go mow a lawn or two, or collect some soda cans for recycling.

LEDs won't raise the temperature of your DC enough to harm it. They really shouldn't raise more then a few degrees, if any at all.
