If the are making this game from the ground up, wouldn't it be better to include Sonic 3's Sonic Sprite? Plus all the special abilities (Electric, Fire, Bubble  )

I didn't like the Sonic 3 sprite as much as Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. And besides, being Sonic 2 they are using, it makes sense that it's the same game just in HD.

The novelty is neat-- but I think it's just that; novelty.

After playing through the first level it would feel boring for me... considering I've played the game through a million times.

Considering Sega made the Dreamcast, it's kinda sad to admit that in doing that, you'd release the best Sonic game on the system.

I do seem to recall there being a few different promising projects back in the day. Sonic Robo Blast 2, of course (whose site claims that a completed version is finally coming this next spring)...Project Mettrix, which was originally a standalone game that ended up becoming a moddable engine that was fairly accurate to how the 16-bit games behaved, and now there's some other project called Sonic GL, which hasn't had any public releases yet. Here's a video:

Speaking about Sonic engines/remakes: People tend to forget about RetroSonic:

of all the projects I really liked the retrosonic engine. Though nothing ever came out besides that first demo yes? Sonic GL LOOKS cool, but looks just like another autopilot driven sonic 3d game.

I've seen the guy posting every now and then, and judging from the 2007 video at Youtube (see above) he made some fantastic progress since the 2006 proof of concept demo.

Part of what I like about the Mettrix engine is that it was specifically designed to be moddable, and even though the project has more or less been abandoned, there are several user-created levels available.

Still, it would be nice to have one established engine for people to focus on. Games like Zelda Classic and Mugen were nice, because they were sort of the de facto standards in their respective niches, which led to an established modding community and a wealth of add-ons and tools.

I feel that this is exactly what will happen with RetroSonic. The fact that it's a freely moddable 2D (Sonic) engine and the only one of its kind running on Dreamcast surely will turn it into another Beats of Rage.

i just burned retro sonic for DC for the first time. I never imagined it would run that well. I played the PC demo through WINE and loved it.

That video looks and sounds impressive, but like every single other Sonic remake/clone I've ever seen, the physics barely resemble those used in the original Mega Drive games. Unless they get them working properly, I can't say I'd have any interest in playing it.

Would it be at all possible for them to just use the original game with a custom emulator that replaces the sprites and tiles with their own, custom high-resolution ones? Something along those lines has been possible with N64 emulators for years, and not too long ago there was a custom emulator that replaced the soundtrack of the Mega Drive version of Golden Axe with a remixed one (in MP3 format)—that way, they could eliminate most of the hard work and have the benefit of the exact same gameplay mechanics.

RetroSonic does a good job in this department, but you probably talk about Sonic 2 HD ?

The Mega Drive soundtrack replacement was done for Sonic 2 IIRC, Golden Axe was the System 16 arcade version that got a soundtrack replacement as part of the short-lived MetalMAME project I think.

More accurately, though:

Sonic Adventure was fun, but had a lot of missteps (too much dialogue/focus on terrible story & side characters, Adventure Fields don't fit the flow for Sonic, camera madness). Starting with Sonic Adventure 2, and increasingly noticeable in Sonic Heroes and Sonic and the Why The Hell Am I In An Arabian Fairy Tale, I am convinced that Sonic Team's creative process goes something like this:

Step 1: Decide to make a new Sonic game.

Step 2: Realize that last Sonic game was horribly broken.

Step 3: Fix (or at least improve) broken mechanics from last Sonic game.

Step 4: Realize that game is at risk of actually being good.

Step 5: To address #4, shoehorn in some horribly broken NEW mechanic, and make it the most prevalent feature.

Step 6: Triumphantly release new game.

I think it's boardroom trouble to be honest. From the extended cast, flavour-of-the-year gameplay additions, cheesy dialog, and Sonic Underground sell-out TV show, it's clear that for whatever reason, Sega believe the franchise can get more money from the child demographic than the hardcore fans from the 16bit-era.

There's probably also a lot of fear involved. Sega have driven Sonic so far down this road now, that the idea of killing off 95% of everything they have created in the last decade and turning everybody back into mute simpletons is just far too scary. After all, would you buy the next Sonic game without the promise of a thrilling conclusion to the Amy/Sonic/Rouge love triangle?!?!

While we are talking about new Sonic games, I found the gameplay of Hedgehog much worse then Weregod, I really enjoyed the Werehog once I mastered it.

Play Sonic Adventure 2 and then play Unleashed while the speed has increased everything else has decreased.
