taking it apart... or by covering up the optical sensor with tape, and using a spray paint thats lacquered or strong enough to endure a ton of contact with the oils on your skin.

Wouldn't it get stuck inside the scroll wheel?
I was thinking something along the lines of those model car/train/airplane spray paint kits, only with a better quality paint. Basically, the mouse should have the same shiny look as the shell of an ibook, or be at least the same smooth feel the keypad hand rest has.

Lots of thin layers of quality spray paint, and a few coats of a decent gloss to stop the paint rubbing away
