Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (PSP)

More of the same, but seems to work better on handheld. The boardgame thing is awesome.

Not bad; I know it was probably price-motivated, but Zelda and RE4 really are better to have the Wii-native versions. There aren't any significant differences in terms of graphics quality or anything else (though Zelda is horizontally flipped for some bizarre reason), but having the Wiimote to aim with makes things a lot easier in both cases.

Thanks. I actually prefer the Gamecube versions of these games because I can play with a regular controller. Not to mention, Link is right-handed in the Wii version (which makes it awkward for a left-handed person like myself).

Halo Reach

Just got back from the midnight launch with a few of my buddies. Not exactly my kind of game really, but was kinda fun being there for the midnight launch anyway.

Ah, midnight launch. I've only ever been to one of those; it was for Smash Bros. Brawl. The experience was rather underwhelming.

Anyway, to add my own to the list:

iPod Touch
- Monkey Island 2:SE
- Robot Unicorn Attack

PS3
- Scott Pilgrim

I'm most of the way through Uncharted 2 now (been taking my time with it), and I have to say: this game is beautiful, but I still like the first one better. The environments in the new game are a little too unbelievable; everything feels like it's there because it's a pretty setpiece, and was specifically made for you to monkey your way through once; there's no way any of these places were ever real structures that had anything remotely resembling a practical purpose. The first game did a much better job of making the environments seem organic (and, for that matter, logical). Uncharted 2 falls prey to the "video game dungeon syndrome" of completely eschewing believable environments for the sake of a cooler puzzle device or a more spectacular sequence.

It kind of ruins the suspension of disbelief when the ancient temple was SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED to run this crazy puzzle machine that can only be operated once and only using your character's special skills, with no other practical use and no sane way of even navigating through it. The first Uncharted used the "ruins" aspect of the setting very effectively to give you a believable explanation of why you had to puzzle and climb your way through environments; the normal, sane-human ways of using the buildings were screwed up by crumbling walls, debris, and the encroaching jungle growth. Uncharted 2 throws that out in favor of fantastical machines that make no sense.

Also, the story feels more like it's there to make excuses for you to jump from one pretty environment to another to give you a variety in setting, rather than to actually tell a cohesive story. It's still a fun game, and the visual design is stunning, but it feels very much like the unnecessary sequel to a very competent original.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 (PSP)

Seems pretty good so far (although, I haven't played that much of it).

Oh yeah, and since I didn't mention it at all, got a PSP last week, along with:
Disgaea Infinite
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions

Also, at some point (when I don't remember):
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PS2)

I've played about 3 hours of the actual game, and 10 hours of Command Board. It's like a fast-paced Monopoly, and I'm completely addicted. I almost hate the fact that I have to play the game just to unlock more boards. If this was an iPhone game, I'd never get anything done, ever.

Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City (NDS)

The best in the series so far. Immense dungeon crawling, and amazingly hardcore.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Bought it on my lunch break today. Can't wait to get home and try it.

A few years ago I was talking with a friend about the PS2 Castlevanias, and how Konami should have done something more like a mix of Devil May Cry and God of War in bringing the game to 3D. (For the record: I actually liked the N64 Castlevania games better than the PS2 ones). From everything I've read, Lords of Shadow seems to do just that. It returns to a more action-based linear approach, and borrows heavily from both God of War and Shadow of the Colossus.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light

This is the best new Final Fantasy game since Final Fantasy X (and longer if you didn't like that one). It's got all the charm of DQ9, but wrapped around a fantastic retro 16-bit days FF RPG rather than something rubbish. Equipment, items, upgrading, dungeons, towns, monsters-in-boxes, 28 switchable classes (no starting from level 1 again), 4 great main characters, a story, a light spread of level grinding, and not a single tutorial in sight.

As much as I love many of the FF games since FF7, FF13 was a step too far. This game represents the other direction they could've continued off in - and I really like it. It's not mindblowingly amazing by any means, but it's great to be playing a retro-style FF game that isn't a remake. The unique style makes it even nicer.

I heartily recommend this to anybody who was looking forward to Dragon Quest IX and got crapped on.

Castlevania 3 for NES.

I don't actually own an NES any more, but this is one of my all-time favorite games, and I vowed long ago that if I ever came across a hard copy, I'd buy it. Oddly enough, it was just sitting there in the discount bin at the local record store tonight. It's currently sitting in our china hutch (which we use for displaying figurines and collectibles, as well as holding our video games), awaiting the day that we once again have equipment on which to play it. Unfortunately, from what I've heard, it'll have to be vintage hardware; most NES-on-a-chip systems seem to choke on CV3.

Heh... I was so caught up in having CV3 that I totally forgot about the other games I bought last night:

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. The graphics are kind of dated, but overall a very fun game. If you liked the original, you'll like this.

God of War Collection.

I also bought a Lynyrd Skynyrd LP, but I don't think that counts as a video game

Sonic 4 Episode 1 (Xbox 360)

I find it enjoyable, even if the rest of you just want to tear it to pieces.
