Best Ten Games of the Last Generation

Post by DaMadFiddler »

So tell me...what do you consider the best ten games of the passing console generation? Now that the Xbox and GameCube are all but dead, and the PS2 and GBA have been relegated to holdover second-rate titles, I think a more or less "complete" perspective of the generation can be had. Applicable platforms include Xbox, GameCube, PS2, Dreamcast, and GBA.

This was actually kind of hard for me to narrow down, because this generation really reinvigorated my interest in video games. After things started going 3D in the mid-90s, I largely lost interest. I bought a GBA, because it was the last refuge of 2D gaming. But then a few select Dreamcast and GameCube titles piqued my interest enough to draw me back in, and I started finding things I actually enjoyed again. We moved past the "hey, look what technology can do!" stage and game design really matured and diversified.

Mine (in no particular order):

1. Rez
2. Super Smash Bros. Melee
3. Super Monkey Ball 2
4. Katamari Damacy
5. Ikaruga
6. Pikmin 2
7. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
8. Resident Evil 4
9. Metroid Prime
10. Half-Life 2

In no order...

Shadow of the Colossus
Katamari Damacy
Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy X
Zelda: Wind Waker
Beyond Good and Evil
Tony Hawk 3
Zelda Minish Cap
Crazy Taxi
Metal Gear Solid 3

As for which one of those I consider to be the best game of last generation, that one easily goes to Dragon Quest VIII. Also, although Twilight Princess should be on there, it does not make this list since I've only played it on Wii.

Half-Life 2 would definitely fall on my list if we could include PC games, as that is the best FPS I have ever played. I have played many of FPS in my time and generally dislike the genre altogether. But Half-Life 2 is in a class of it's own, and currently stands as one of only two FPS I have ever beaten (the first one being Doom 64).

There was an Xbox port of Half-Life 2, though, so you can still include it ;)

I know how you feel, though. I get very, very bored with first person shooters, and anyone who DOES play them is a lot better than I am anyway, so not even the multiplayer is worth it. Before HL2, I've only put any real time into four: Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and Timesplitters: Future Perfect. Half-Life 2 is the first one in almost ten years that I've really enjoyed enough to get all the way through.

I was going by previous hardware generation. However, this is allowed on a technicality, since it was ported to GameCube.

Your right I just heard 10 best games of this generation and assumed games out now. Yeah I cant even name 10 that are worth mentioning unless I name like only dc titles and maybe like 3 ps2 titles.

Lets try again

1) Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2 (GC), It added so much more content over any other pso and the grapics on the new gamecube stages where great.

2) Skies of Arcadia/Legends (DC,GC) One of the 2 greatest DC rpgs. Great graphics and story only problem was tons of random battles. Which was fixed on GC.

3) Grandia 2 (DC) By far the greatest version of Grandia 2. One of the absolute best rpgs of the last generation. Stay away from the inferior pc and ps2 versions.

4) Resident Evil 4 (GC, PS2) Both version are extremly great. Ps2 offers true 480p Widescreen which tends to look better on a HDtv than the GC version. However the gamecube version looks amazingly better on a SDtv than the ps2 version. This Resident redefind how the series was played. Many popular games have now stolen its over the shoulder aiming system, Example GoW.

5) Zone of Enders 2(PS2) One of the best visuals ever show cased on a ps2. The gameplay is smooth and flashy. Everything you'd want a mech fighter.

6) Capcom VS Snk 2 (DC) The only propper port from the arcade. The most balanced fighter period. One of capcom's 3 "tournement fighters" that seems to always be played at every 2d fighting tournement ever.

7) Beatmania IIDX series (PS2) The best music simulation game ever always constantly improving every new game.

8)Virtua Fighter 4(Arcade, PS2) A return to the top for the VF series. AFter a huge failure of Vf3, vf4 redemed the series in everyway and was vastly supior to its viral Tekken 4.

9)Ikaruga (DC, GC, Arcade) The best vertical shooter ever. Period. Stfu about it and dont mention Radiant Silver Gun cause Ikaruga is still better.

10) Sonic Adventure (DC, GC, PC) One of my favorite sonics and one of the only Sonics that was actually good in 3d.

No, because the Xbox version requires the use of a controller for a FPS, which automatically classifies it as a failure. And beyond that, I'm going by games I have played, and I have not played the Xbox version of HL2.

Guess this is anything from GBA/Dreamcast/DS/PSP/ps2/gamecube/xbox then? If so hers mine in no order:

1. Final Fantasy X

2. Twilight Princess

3. Resident Evil 4

4. GTA SA

5. Skies of Arcadia (never could get through the game, but I still have a deep respect for it)

6. Morrowwind

7. Half-Life 2

8. Star Wars Battlefront 2

There are other games that I really enjoyed, but I just can't list them in a top 10 list. I am sure there some I am overlooking or forgetting (been a lot of games since 2001ish).
Im sure I am leaving some out
