whats the diffrence between promo rez and rez retail?

I ask because a freind just gave me his retail rez (a bit scratched up) ive wanted this game forever. And if the promo has the full game, i may sell this copy on ebay and look for a promo copy.

This isn't really a 'promo copy' per se. It is a pre-release. This is a copy that was sent to magazines or other outlets for review prior to the final release of the game.
